180 Big enough or not ?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey Seedubs since you never had an adult dovii, you obviously have no clue what you are talking about. Why don't you go troll a different thread?

No thanks.....having plenty of fun here.

Btw, maybe you should see how many seedubsx have been banned on fishforums.

But really, I think I'm done with the petty arguing in this thread. Until someone provides me with some clear in site as to why a 14" dovii is too big for a 265.....I'll continue with my opinion of this forum being overkill on tank recommendations, and I'll continue with my recommendations.

I'm just saying that there is no evidence that keeping a Dovii in a 180 is detremental or cruel to the fish as long as water conditions are good.

As I have said before, it is my belief that most people keeping Dovii in 180's allow water conditions to deteriorate, which causes the notion that "Dovii shouldn't be in 180's." Keeping one in a 180 required frequent large water changes, which most people won't do. But if the water conditions are kept in check, I fully believe that a single male Dovii is fine in a 180.

it has absolutely nothing to do with the water quality when it comes to having a potientially 24" fish in a 24" wide tank. thats the thing your not getting here. yes water quality is super important but the fish needs the swimming space to be able to turn around freely with having to contort its body to do so. and if you read page 301 paragraph 32 of the geneva convention it explains all this out for you so your confusion will be over. have you not noticed that your the only one on here really thats disputing this? does that mean anything to you as you have never even had a large dovii???

Do I really need to go bringing up old threads? There's others other than me that have the same belief.

And as has been said.....on average they get around 18". A 24"er is an anomaly. If they all got 24", I'd say get a 2.5 foot tank. But 99% will be fine for life in a 180. Please, inform me as to where all these 24" monsters are. If I recall, there are maybe 2 total on this forum, and bunches more that are topping out at 18".

A good read:

Specifically, page 4 is of interest.

There are not many of the 24" monsters as I have said because they are kept in 6'X24", 8'x30" and what not. So the average is based on these tank sizes? Also from what I gather the average many talk about are from those on this site......every person that has a 24" Dovii does not post here.

The average size of Dovii kept in large tanks on this site are 24". The average size of Dovii on this site are 17" in 30" wide tanks.........we all know Mel's 24"+ is in a 600, cchhcc is in a 1000 gal and on its way to 24". The largest I have seen in person was 24" plus easy and thick 4"+.

If 99% will be fine in a 180 where are the 10 yr old + monsters at that are kept in 180s? More like 99% are kept in 180 gals.

You don't always need statistics to have something be true.

Not trying to pile on just my 2 cents.

Also if it was about 99%....why does the 1% of members on this site that house these monsters in large tanks have 1% of the larger specimens. A 24" Umbee and a 24" Dovii......is this a anomaly?

Exactly, well put NWatson, the world of keeping large dovii in captivity doesn't begin or end on MFK. Those with big tanks have big dovii, those that don't, have stunted dovii.

And hey, according to Don Conkel all one has to do is punch holes in the caudal fin of a male dovii, and like magic, shazam, and you can keep a breeding pair in a 100 gallon tank. WTF? :WHOA:
