180 gallon pearsei and aureus

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey dmd if for some reasonone of my pearsei gets ejected by the others I will give you dibs alright bro..

a 180 is not big enough for 5 pearsi i have raised them for a few years now and i have had a few get over 15 inches in less than 2 years,my current one is exactly 17 months old and 13 inches and doesnt seem to be slowing down. Also with 5 if you end up with a pair it will be disaster for the others,in my experience breeding pairs are relentless on ther tank mates.they do well when not a pair though. They seem to be really peaceful if they are not the biggest fish in the tank, but if they are the largest they do tend to dominate. I have never been able to keep more than two in a 180 without aggression problems(conspesific). I have had great success keeping them with other large fish(bocourti, oscars, argentea and synspilum, but they always started out as the smaller fish,my current one battles my bocourti daily(no real damage but i now have to keep an eye on them)
My current one at 17 months(13 inches)raised from fry

i love vieja fish

Thats funny because that is what my little Jack killed; two different types of Vieja. He bullies the new Red Tiger Mota a little but that guy is pretty tough, seems to be holding his own.

Back to topic, pearsei ... I dont think the Pearse cichlid; is a "vieja".

Man that is what I was waiting for... thank you so much for your insight buddha. And it sounds like 5 is going to be a bit much for my tank so when the time comes I will have at least 2 up for sale... I would really love to keep an argentea and a pair of thorchthy aureus with a pair of pearsei... but is sounds like that might not be an option, what do you think buddha? From the sounds of it the argentea should be bigger then the pearsei wich means I need to go see if I can't pick up an adult argentea. Cha ching.. never a cheap fish when adult and never easy to find somebody wanting to part with an adult argentea... should be intresting.. once again thank you buddha. Dmd I will stay in contact .

Btw buddha very nice looking fish... I will try to post some pics of my biggest one tomorrow.. aprox. 8". And around 10 months old.

its no problem,my argentea is smaller than my pearsi but my bocourti is bigger,so he focuses most of his attention on the bocourti(sparing partners)and that lets the argentea eat all the food. Pearsei seem to do well with different size tank mates the aureus should do great to fast for them to be bothered. I have kept mine with silverdollars,t. passiones, and eartheaters with out much problem. The biggest problem i had was with a blackbelt(fought hard all the time had to move the blackbelt) nicraguense(the pearsei killed him) and green terror(also killed)but now as he has gotten older he has seemed to accept tank mates really well as long as he has enough room to stay to himself hen he doesnt feel like being bothered, they are a mellow fish most of the time but can put up a good fight when they want too.

My current setup is a 180
stock:
pair of bocourti(14 inche male,10 inche female)
pearsei(13 inches)
urau(12 inches)
large eather eater(7 inches)
gold severum(7 inches)
pair of argentea(male 7 inches,female 5 inches)
this stock has worked the best so far,no major agression, this whole setup will be moved to a 300 gallon by may(already have the tank, just working on filtration)

Doesnt look to crowded, but its getting there as they grow, will have plenty of room in the 300.

You see him peeking out from his spot behind the driftwood(as long as no one goes back there he his happy)

Very nice setup... alright then, I'm happy with a final stock list for the 180 being pair of pearsei, pair of aureus, and single argentea.... your advice is to get a argentea that is bigger then the pearsei if I have it correct right?? Like I said its gonna be tough to find one bigger.. maybe easier to find same size would this start any issues you could forsee?... once again thanks for all the inshight I really am thankful.
