I've heard that they can be kept together, but in a very large heavily planted tank. I heard of keeping them in a minimum of 150g.

I have seen a bunch of male betta's in 55 at my lfs the staff says they will not fight when their is a large number of them in single tank.I am not saying that its a good move for u but there was no fighting that i seen while i was there maybe a half hour.

My cousin breeds bettas in Thailand. He said that if they grow up together in the same tank, there will be minimal fighting, but once you separate them, their instincts really starts to kick in.

I kept 5 male bettas in a 20 long with lots of plants. They lived fine for 6 months until African Clawer Frog thought they looked like something he wanted to eat. And than they were dinner. The bettas didn't really bother each other much they had enough space to keep them selves happy.

I think you would be fine. A heavy planted 55 is pretty big, and im sure bettas dont live in solidarity in the wild. As long as they both have their own territory.

i've kept dwarf gouramis and bettas together before and that was in a ten gallon tank so i think that you should be ok. just monitor them, if anything starts just get the one you like less and give it to a friend.
