2 Bettas in a 55?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, are they both female? I keep all of my female Betta's together in a 29 gallon aquarium. They fought a little at first but the have to establish a pecking order and now their fine.

I'm betting you'll be fine. I'm betting that the "keeping them in large groups helps limit aggression" might be true too.

Well I picked up the bettas today. Turns out they're not both males like I was thinking, so I think this might work. Right now they're both in their own 1gal betta tanks getting slowly accustomed to the water that's in my 55. I'll probably put them in on Friday.

Are they both females or a male and a female? If both are females, then they'll be fine together. If they're a male and female, the male will kill the female or he might breed with her and then kill her.

Hey, my store just got in abunch of long fined FEMALES.

Crazy colors, crazy long crowntail fins..

We put 10 in a 10gall...no problem at all.

Maby you can try that haha. Same looks, diffrent sex.

It's a male and female

i used to have a 10 gallon with a dozen females and one male, but, I had a crapload of live plants and a strong florescent light and after a week or so they settled down after a few non threatening fin nipping/rip incidents, they got big and got along fine, especially the male but he was usually pretty tired and with the alpha female :naughty:

They will fight

It doesn't matter how big the tank is, they will fight. I tried it years ago in a 150 gallon community tank with a lot of plants, places to hide, and a lot of fish to distract them and they fought to the death. I thought that in the wild they are in the same area, so it might work, I was wrong.

the males will kill each other no matter what.

you can definitely do it with females. 3 or more is suggested because the female will establish a pecking order.

in the wild they don't live with any other fish, they live solitary in rice patty puddles, and when its time for them to mate they jump form puddle to puddle till they find a female, that's whey they can live in small bowls and they are very good jumpers.

at least that's what i have read.

are you getting them form petco? because theres that deal goin on there where you get a bowl thingy and then you get a male and a female free.

if you are, i'v spent all week telling people not to put them togeather because (othere then the fact that all the people i talk to are only getting them because they are free and have never taken care of fish before.) the ones they send us at petco have lived their intire lives in vary small habitats and before they get to the store they have never incountered a nother fish, so all the ones we get are extreamly agressive, or way too submisive.

if your going to keep them togeather, you should get them form a store that sells them form a tank where they are togeather. there's a petland by me that does that.
