That is a very good design. The prior posted w/d is not the design I would use. However, if I had that style I would use the second chamber for a refugium.

u understand by what i ment by using your tank space efficently now?

I understood it from the beginning, but I never thought the prior design was used the space the most efficiently, however with a refuge, that will become one of the best filters.

With the picture if you took it and mounted it above the tank, and drilled the far side where the pump is and plumbed a return to the tank. Then the green was made into a refugium with terrestrial plants, such as philodendron, then have the leaves over the side covering the tank this would increase the efficiency of the filter. Then use a self priming suction pump to draw water from the tank and put it in where the over flow would normally put it. This way when the power goes out, the pump will stop running, and the water from the filter will go back to the tank, with minimal, to no overflowing.

A dsb with lots of plants, exxcellent refugium. The dsb would turn nitrates into nitrogen, and the plants would take up more of the nitrogeous waste. All the biomedia in the world may help ammonia and nitrites, but do nothing for nitrates. This is the design I would use. I do not feel that it is wasted space. But at the same time, it would not be the best for a planted tank. Just because to much co2 would be lost. But plants that you aren't showing and grow fast like Elodea would be great. In the "wasted" space.

i dont even think the kid who asked the question is even online this has turnd into our disscusion

Yeah, our discussion for the kid to read tomorrow, so he can make an informed decision.

And I see that Wyldefya and I are on the same page, cept I would keep it below in the cabinet on a reverse light cycle.

Pretty heavy. My planted tank get ~25 ppm nitrate added to it every week, but it is a full setup planted tank. That refugium/w/d (if 55 like it looks) it could probably do 150 gallons. Personally I'd ditch the bioballs for nylon pot scrubbers.
