What do you think about this : along with the tetras you already have, a big group of hatchette fish and/or 8-10 spotted silver dollars, and maybe some plants with dark red leaves for the bottom-towards middle of tank, and a patch or two of floating plants on top towards one of the corners of tank, and small bunch of lace cory's for bottom feeders. With top/floating plants you could sort'f have a 'blackwater effect' from the shading AND still be able to see all your hard work and beatiful fish and decore that you've spent lots of time, $, and effort to produce what most of would call your very own 'Master piece'.

I actually would love to have that tank for my dragon goby. But my floor would not! KINBOTE> question for ya - Is that tank on a basement floor?, if it's not, I'm wanting to know what kind of support(s) is/are under the there?

Nope, it's not a basement floor, but I got the same guy who built the stand to add some reinforcement to the floor, so the regular joists are supported by a few extra vertical piles going straight into concrete. It's quite an old house and the joists were actually spaced a bit wider than standard, but it wasn't really a big deal to strengthen it up. If you know a builder who won't rip you off it shouldn't be too difficult to sure up whatever you've got.

I like your idea with the coloured plants, although I'm pretty sure the silver dollars you suggested would eat them all in a few hours...

I'd like hatchet fish but with the jumping I'm not convinced they won't be more trouble than they're worth, so I need to keep researching it.

Here's what I'm thinking species-wise to start with:

6 spotted metynnises
maybe 6 hatchet fish
15 - 20 rosy tetras
15 - 20 black phantom tetras
20 cardinal tetras
4 catfish of some sort.

I'm wondering if anyone has any idea of how many species I could get away with while still looking natural. I figure as I don't have too many species per niche it should seem plausible. Any thoughts?
