240 gallon discus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Not Bad sir. I like it. May want to watch the frog though. They eat small fish

nice tank but you have probably the worst substrate for juvie discus. they need to be fed 6-8 times per day and it's going to be really hard to keep that gravel clean. bb is best until they grow a bit but even sand would be better. not saying your discus are going to die. with that tank, you should have went with much larger discus. I agree with kanta about the frog. good luck and keep us posted.

Oh really? Even with the bottom feeders so far they've all been doing a good job of keeping it clean, but as far as waste I guess ur right, I'll use the grab vac then so that way it brings all the sand up cause it's mixed, sand with those pebbles mostly sand I just threw the pebbles on top, and as far as the frog I'll keep an eye out, the tetras are bigger than they are but good to know thanks for all the advice. So would u recommend a smaller tank for them to grow first then bigger tank for bigger size, do they grow slower in big tanks?

Its easy to give young fish the WC and food they need in a smaller tank. Doing daily WC of 50% or more on a 200Gal tank is A LOT. Planted tanks are not the best for growing out discus because you have the Substrate and cleaning around LOTS of plants is not always easy.

You want a tank that is easy to keep clean when you grow out discus.

Ok right now I have 12 discus all the same size. So would a 60 gallon be good? And what if I had a sump under the 240 an use it as a tank like the picture I posted on this thread with that water going in and out from the 240 would that be good enough for a water change cause it's
Different water, or should I leave the 240 and 60 separate right now? And I'll prob leave the 60 with no gravel would that be good just like 3deeZ said and how long will it take for them to grow figure I feed them about 6 times a day

for those of you following me on my way to get this tank done through here, i have more pics of what ive done to the stand so far, i got a 60 gallon tank off keystone on here for 30 bucks! thanks key stone. as far as updates, i put two legs in the front then i took the middle leg off, that opening now between the two new legs is going to be how wide the opening window for the refugium is going to be which is 3'. as far as height its going to be about 17" high, so im trying to decide if im going to make a small platform for the 60 gallon to raise it a little more or leave it how it is. theres also another tank i was looking at, its 120 gallon i think the dimensions are 5' long x 20" tallx 18"W that tank would give me more space for the water coming in from the 240, and more room for the water going out. Keep in mind this tank will have about 3 or 4 chambers im looking at 1' for in, with filter pads and heater in there, second will be the section where fish go, and third/ fourth will be either 1' with another filter pad and pump or 2-3" with sponge in there and the rest for the pump to take back to the 240. the last one wont be filled all the way to prevent any overflow. For the 60 gallon its not as much space the 60 gallon is about 6" for the water coming in and 8" for the water going out. As far as the section where the fish will be in thats about 3' x 17"T x 15.5" W so thats about 40 Gallons. I was thinking of putting cichlids in there i some some frontosas i thought those were pretty nice not sure how big they get though so im going to get little ones, or some other colorful ones as well, do all cichlids get along though? ive never had any but the discus, but those dont get along with the other cichlids. anyone have any other suggestions ideas or comments? attatched i also have some pics of my new discus, so far i have 12 discus, might get four more on monday but i have to see them, i want more of the red/ orange

here are pics of the 60 gallon tank at bottom with the lights on and off i have two t8 36" lights, one blue and one white. and along are pics of some of the discus i just got.

Personally id go with the 60 to get those new discus beffy and get them up to around 3'' or so, the 120 might be better. but since they are small guys leave the tank bare bottom and jsut keep it somple. probably just keep it bare all around and fed them lots and do 50%or bigger water changes every other day. That will get them big fast. Ive read that you can 50% plus water changes daily for discus but that will get old fast and its a lot of water. just saying that will be the easiest way to keep them healthy and grow them fast
