300 Gallon Busted

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sometimes things just happen. There is always the risk that there will be a failure, even with a new tank. Unfortunately, you were one of the ones to prove it. Sorry man.

Still waiting for pics... which panel blew out?

I'd give the guy you bought it from HELL. Tell him you want ur money back or you can sue because he put you and the rest of your families life in danger. dont give up and just let that money and effort be wasted

your statement makes no sense....unless the seller gave a written warranty which I doubt since it's an used item..." he put the family in danger":screwy:.....how ? by selling a fish tank ? ....it's unfortunate but coluld be (maybe) avoided if the buyer would have ask to see the tank filled before purchase (common practice for a tank that size)

I was under the impression that, assuming no defect in the glass, the age of the tank would not matter in terms of the structural integrity of the glass panels itself.

the silicone seams, yes, definately.

but not the glass strength itself.

that being said, what we don't know is how many times this tank was drained, filled and transported over its lifetime. each time could have had a ding etc that possibly could have lead to failure down the road.

its a guessing game.

:(

the youngest this tank could be would be about 10 years. I started working at the LFS in the summer of 99, and at that point, tanks were not yet braced. the braces (from Allglass, Perfecto etc) started being used sometime around 2000 I believe. thats when the glass got thinner too..

oohh the truth came out he said he had shimes under it to level it out. bro thats 2580 pounds of water. levelness is very important. hope the guy that sold you this tank doesnt see that post. best of luck!!! i wouldnt give up the hobby tho.

I am glad to hear no one got hurt. I think you should sue the guy if he does not refund your money and makes good your loss. Take some pics of the damage for the record in case you decide to sue him later.

Dont give up the hobby, just take some time off if you like before getting another new tank. All the best to you.

I had shims...how is that going to make it bust??? I've always used carpet shims and wood shimes on all my tanks for water testing in my garage...this isn't my first rodeo....I've water tested MANY tanks in that same spot using same method...The run off isn't a ski slope, is not even a degree lean. Ya, now I have to find out what to do with big chunks of glass, alot of it!

i don't want to sue the guy!!! But I've never had a tank explode me, Ive had many leaks....never a bust though. Its just hard to see money go down the drain, and cause more damage on its way down, causing me to loose more money... I'm just glad no one is hurt, I'll go take some pics of a busted tank...Right after it happened I was in a rush, and totally forgot and didn't think to take pics...Wish I woulda had the bust on camera..Maybe I could sell it to make my losses, lol!!!
