i don't want to sue the guy!!! But I've never had a tank explode me, Ive had many leaks....never a bust though. Its just hard to see money go down the drain, and cause more damage on its way down, causing me to loose more money... I'm just glad no one is hurt, I'll go take some pics of a busted tank...Right after it happened I was in a rush, and totally forgot and didn't think to take pics...Wish I woulda had the bust on camera..Maybe I could sell it to make my losses, lol!!!

See, sharing with friends here helps in feeling lighter. I appreciate your optimism. As they say, **** happens.

actually the tank's cracked. but it sounds like an explosion hence referred to as such. my 180 also cracked during water testing and it does sound like an explosion.

your statement makes no sense....unless the seller gave a written warranty which I doubt since it's an used item..." he put the family in danger":screwy:.....how ? by selling a fish tank ? ....it's unfortunate but coluld be (maybe) avoided if the buyer would have ask to see the tank filled before purchase (common practice for a tank that size)
You can sue whether or not there is a written statement. And if it were to burst around him or his wife then the glass could do some major damage including the damages to the house. all the guy has to say in court is that he sold him the tank and said it could be filled with water. than he has to give the money back and pay for damages.

the reason it sounds like an explosion:
1 gallon of water = 8.35 pounds
300 gallon's of water = 2,505 pounds
glass thickness = 15 mm

2 and a half tons just forced 4 walls of 15mm thick glass to break apart... It sounds like a bomb went off...It could be called a bomb if you want, lol. **** does happen, and im lucky it didn't do more damage. The guy still hasn't replied to my e-mail....I might call him later, I just want what I paid him...

I had shims...how is that going to make it bust???

from what I understand, shims directly underneath the bottom panel of the aquarium creates uneven pressure. the part that has the shim directly underneath it is a high spot when the full weight of the water/aquarium is pushing down against it. the parts directly local to the shim would be off the ground (floating) and the weight of the water is pushing down, but it has nothing to push back against it (since the bottom panel is floating). this creates the uneven pressure between the part of the bottom that is floating and the part that is in contact with the shim. this can lead to a cracked bottom.

this is why it is important to shim the stand never the tank itself.

however, as you said, you have done this before and no problems, so again, we can't really be exactly sure why the tank cracked. all we can do is guess.

also, from your pics, the bottom panel DID NOT break, so its likely that shimming had nothing to do with the breakage.

but its good to know for future reference.

again, so sorry for what happened.

(runs to check 150g)

he said hes tested many tanks this way and never had a problem, so i have to assume he tests them on some type of stand, because if he didnt he would of had a problem by now

I just put it directly on the ground...i put one rug down on the whole thing and on the sloping side i put an extra carpet or towel, then get e leveler and test it, if it level i start filling it, 1/4 at a time...like i said before I've had 3/4 water in it before with no probs... It was the full that made it blow, I just hope this never happens to anyone else.... IT IS A MESS!!! I jsut now got my garage relitively dry...still two puddles though. I just think the seems blew on one side, I've been looking at the glass and only one side is cracked, the rest are still in one piece...
