300ish Gallon plywood - First attempt

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
The rubber stuff works. I have a box made out of folded paper coated with it is holding, and holding well. It moreso looks like a bowl now.

Also bonds to glass as a friend has tested it with glass.

doesn't that liquid rubber stuff turn brown when under constant submersion?

It would hold up but I'd rather not have my tank looking like a giant hot chocolate.

It may not have been the liquid rubber. But I'll look into it. The paint I ordered is still on order just held up for right now. And with xmas and all this next week it's kinda on hold with all the holiday stuff going on.

As for Using the acrylic. I haven't seen anyone close to the regular glass price yet. If you can get a price better let me know. I need 1" thick for the height I have. But I'm also partial to glass for its scratch resistance. I plan on using sand in my tank and it would be very easy for it to scratch up the window.

My 150 is acrylic. Cleaning the inside was always a stressful and elbo-grease intensive process till I figured out I could use the Oral-B Braun electric toothbrush on it. BOO-Ya. works great and wont scratch the acrylic. I have tons of used units as my company sells these things and I get a new sample every year.

I thought the optically clear feature of acrylic at these thicknesses would prevail over glass and the fact that it won't explode.

Did a bit of looking around and found the thread of Joey using the Zavlar liquid rubber.

It did indeed turn brown after some time but still holds fine.

Those are from Joey's build.

I like the light colored sand and the dark background. I'm going for the same effect hopefully.

You sure thats rubber? Almost looks like wood grain showing thru...

That ray in the last pic looks like it has its eyes blacked out to hide its identity, like some spec ops ray... lol

Those are Joeys pictures from his thread. I think it's just brush marks from the application not wood grain. They lines are rather straight for wood grain.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. The holidays are kicking my schedules ass it seems.

Small update.

Just got a call from the Ace that my Black paint is in. Hopefully I can pick it up today or Saturday. I think they are closed tomorrow being xmas and all. But I'd like to get my tests underway for this paint to find out if it is going to work for me or if I need to find something else.

Thank you. I ordered the stuff on the 4th. They didn't order it the first week then it was on back order after that.

I'm just interested to see if it works out. Makes a good option that can open up a lot more people to being able to build plywood tanks. It would help cut down one of the larger costs for custom builds. And since Ace hardwares across the country can get it, the paint is much more available then say pond armor or other things.

Wooooohooo. Got 50 bucks for xmas. The girlfriends family does stuff eve night so I got some decent stuff for them. Good thing I gave them all good presents last year and this one.

So gonna go pick up the paint tomorrow if they are open otherwise it'll be Saturday. Whenever they open back up again.
