305 Gallon Build W/ 120 Gallon Sump

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
That’s cool but I only have one tank and only need 2GPH to do a 67% water change a week. I can achieve this using one drip emitter. Are you doing multiple tanks?
No Im just going to use 2 or 3 lines to hit my water change goal. .75 gph/line 1.5 to 2.25gph. But I may run a hospital tank seperate from this system so could send lines there too.

Do you guys think a 3GPH drip is too much for my tank? Roughly 400 gallons since the tank and sump aren’t 100% full. This amounts to 504 Gallons a week being changed. The Home Depot 2GPH drip emitter is not accurate (I have tried three in a row) and it actually provides 3GPH.

I don't see why not as long as you are comfortable with that lvl of water use. It shouldn't hurt anything.
I’d rather not use that much water to be honest. Not only the water bill but the heaters will stay on longer. Too bad emitters are so cheap and inaccurate. I may just use a ball valve and create my own drip. I’m using a 25psi regulator so I know it’s not a pressure issue

You could always use a needle valve. They are made from brass and/or copper, but you probably have copper plumbing anyway, so I don’t think it will hurt anything.

Yes I may explore the valve route. I calculated the cost and based on my townships rate of $1.34 m3 (cubic metre), including a bit extra, I’m only around $11 a month of added water usage. I guess if the added water doesn’t hurt the fish in any way I may leave it at 3GPH. The heaters are my next major concern having them literally running 24/7 while it drips.

On another note I drilled my sump successfully and have a drain in there to accommodate the drip system. I also bought my first two fish! I have a Jack Dempsey Cichlid and an African Odoe Pike. Trying to wean the Pike off live food has been a challenge for sure.

Are you running a herbie style overflow, or just a regular gravity drain?
