48x48 Workhorse "The Rig"

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Its funny. I plan on using a ultima 1000 with hmf on my planned 535g and feel like that is over filtering and then I look at this. Ultima 1000 and K1 reactor on a tank that is half the size of mine :) Curious to see how you do the plumbing.

You’re the man Justin. I appreciate all the help and this posting. You can literally write a book just by taking each of your threads and making it its own chapter. From plant filtration, to plumbing, to backgrounds.m, to breeding Rays.

Thanks bro. I’ve always enjoyed the challenge and pushing things forward. I’m stoked for your build to come together!!!

I’m still undecided on the sump. We have options. I could increase the flow, use the Ultima for mechanical, plug the towers, pack the towers with K1 and run internal bio. That would save me a pump and a sump for one of the 6x3’s.

I like to over filter because I upgrade tanks when one comes available. I dont always have the budget for filtration. Nice to have on hand and cycled to plug and play on a larger set up.

How do you configure the ultima for just mechanical? Is it easy to setup k1?

I want redundant filtration hence the ultima/hmf. Didn’t even think about doing overflow towers with k1 instead of hmf. Would that be easy to do? Wouldn’t mind not ever having to clean sponges.

It’s just flow and bio elsewhere that decides how much is mech vs bio. Same setup

Screw it let’s do the tower idea if it helps you plan. I’ve never tried it before so it should be fun. Guess I won’t be plugging those bulkheads after all

why wouldn't you plug the bulkheads. Figured you would do something like the below vid but with your overflow towers. Second link is to another member in switzerland that did a hmf/k1 combo filter but I think that takes up too much space frankly.

Glad you are considering it and hope you dont regret doing it. Curious to the pros and cons of K1 as I know nothing about it.

Not plugging the bulkheads means water will flow freely into the towers where K1 will boil. Think two small sumps inside the tank. I’ll plug the bottom bulkheads to hold the water in and open up the bulkheads on the face of the towers.

K1 pros - lots of bio capacity, self cleaning
K1 cons - needs lots of air to run, expensive
