55 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I think your list would bo OK with 1 BP and without the dozen tetras.

I will say, I've currently got a 7" cichlid in a 55 gallon with only a swordtail and a tiny clown pleco as tankmates. Water changes twice a week are necessary, and when I do them, the gravel is filled with gunk. Big adult cichlids poop alot, and plecos do as well. If two 50% water changes a week sounds like too much to you, I would keep the stocking much lighter. BP + bristlenose alone will make a lot of poo.
Agreed ?
Big cichlids, pleco, bichirs poo a looootttttt.

Awesome well I will probably go with 1 parrot and the stock list with tetras and the pleco and molly are blood parrots fine alone? Or do they do better in pairs?

They are fine alone, they can live in pairs or groups but it is not guaranteed that they will get along. I will say that if you had 2 BPs, you would be over stocked with the rest of the fish on your list. I still think list is a bit too heavy with one BP.

2 bp may fight.
I’d pick tetras or mollies, no need for 2 types of dithers. Mollies poop a lot, but are great for algae control (basically don’t even need the bn pleco).

Okay perfect that’s good info to! Thanks might skip on the pleco then! And go for mollies thank you didn’t realize they are big time algae feeders! Also yah we are looking to bond with the blood parrot so we will stick with 1 thanks for that info I’ve never kept a blood parrot so Idk to much about them!

As messed up as they are, they are a fun fish! Blood parrots have a whole lot of personality ( FINWIN FINWIN has stories). Mine started begging for food in a day, faster than any other fish of mine, and has even jumped out of the tank just to get the food I was about to put in…real characters. Mine acts tough to impress his wife (convict cichlid) but is really harmless. All this personality is there despite being in a tank with a Dempsey, convict, and leporinus + dithers and a Raphael cat, so I’m not really sure that personality is lost by being with others.
As for mollies, they are known to destroy algae in reef tanks (they can live in saltwater), and this reputation holds in fresh. Between them, excel, and adding salt for ich, they have cleared my planted tank of hair algae:

Awesome that is good to know! I’ve heard that and I’ve never had tons of luck keeping mollies any tips would be awesome! Is there a particular type that thrives in fresh i have heard some definitley need brackish

The captive bred, color morphed, varieties would probably be best suited. Most important is having high ph and hard water, as that is what they are evolved for, luckily so are blood parrots.
Dalmatians and balloons never lasted long for me.
