55 gallon tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hey all so we have decided on a final stocking which I believe will be fine. For filtration ended up going with the aquaclear 50 and marineland penguin 375 and a sponge filter I always have one. But anyways the stocking we are leaning towards is
1 blood parrot
1 angelfish
3 or 4 pictus catfish
5 platies
5 mollies
1 red tail black shark
1 dwarf gourami

so far we have the angel parrot 2 pictus want to add another pictus also 3 mollies 3 platies and the gourami so far everything has remained very peaceful and really onlythe smallest chase from the parrot but other wise things have been going very nicely. Do you all think this is a fine stock with my filtration and performing weekly 50 to 60 percent water changes?

What are your nitrate readings right now using the API liquid nitrate test? If you can't do enough water changes to keep it at orange (20ppm or less everyday), then you have too many fish.

Well currently I just tested today there is 0 ammonia 0 nitrite and 2 to 5 nitrate ppm so the water quality with the current stock is exceptional to me. And the angelfish is medium sized and so is the blood parrot so water quality has been good so far. Yah I know about that my damn 125 needs a 60 percent and a 30 percent weekly to keep it around 10ppm haha but I am definitley heavily stocked there.

3 or 4 pictus catfish

I would not recommend the pictus for a 208 liter tank. Their very long barbels give them the space requirements of fish twice their length, meaning that doubling the usual 6x the length rule from Practical Fishkeeping would suggest 180 cm as a minimum tank size.
My suggestion for them would be to move 1* into your 473 liter (as it's got sufficient length), provided there are no incompatible fish in there (eg: fish it might eat, fish that might eat it, or fish with different water parameters). But if it isn't possible to do that, I'd advise rehoming all of the ones you have.

*They will get very territorial with each other as adults. It's therefore better to rehome multiples and only have 1, as opposed to the group erroneously recommended by some.

As for the other fish, I am not so knowledgeable. But Rocksor has given valid input and you can also consult AqAdvisor.

Well the pictus cat is already in the 55 I kept 4 together in a 55 they lived together pretty fine for 5 years until an ich outbreak and I screwed up at the time and put in to much medication I killed them and was devastated …. But there’s no way he can go in the 125 I’m fully stocked and my Oscar or jack will try to eat him I’m sure. But on a side note can I keep just 2 pictus and 3 upside down cats instead of the 4 pictus any opinions on that?

Or actually drop that idea just 2 pictus with the red tailed shark for the bottom and maybe could that free up space for a bristlenose pleco? Or should I just roll with the original idea of 3 or 4 pictus with the shark?

Sharks can get mean with age. I’d say best to have the one cat species, and a pleco would only overcrowd things.
You may run into issues with the angel and parrot’s different needs for parameters though.

Okay sounds good I will leave the pleco out and so far the angel and parrot have been avoiding each other no issues yet fingers crossed and okay I will just add 2 more pictus the shark 2 more platies and 1 male lyretail molly I saw today that’s stunning and call it a tank! Thanks for the feedback if the shark starts being to aggressive he will be rehomed

You may have gotten lucky - even red tail and rainbow sharks are occassionally reported to tolerate their own kind. Either way I would at least advise keeping an eye out for territoriality.

PS: How much did the pictus swim up and down the walls of the tank?

I think Deadeye's about right on stocking.

Best of luck!
