55 gallon tank

What do you mean up and down? They swam across the tank lol
They can often be seen going up and down the height of the tank. At least they did in my short experience with them.

Up and down the height of the tank is what I meant. They are said to do this if they feel constrained in terms of barbel-space, which makes sense.

Oh I see haha sorry I was confused my bad? and no mine always swam laps across and back ! I do think 3 pictus can be okay in a 55 though.

Wow, you really are lucky with your pictus! Not only did they get along, they didn't have the up and down confinement often reported in <180 cm tanks.

Haha I mean I guess so. I mean the way everyone is talking has me worried adding more pictus could be a mistake even if it worked in the past… if I just kept this pictus solo would that be an issue? And I could pick some other type of bottom feeder possibly ??? Any other suggestions are welcome. I love pictus catfish and I really like this one I have now he is just skiddish would even a pair of pictus so adding 1 more. Be better than adding 2 more? I just can’t put them in my big tank that’s a death sentence for my Oscar and them. Honestly I’m open to all suggestions I don’t want my catfish to be unhappy even if it worked before. So all ideas are welcome.

Typically 55 is considered enough, and they are generally known to school, at least when young.
A good alternative is a solo Raphael cat. Super hardy and easy to care for. I recommend only one bottom feeder species per tank (at least in relatively small ones) to minimize competition.

When young, they can school (as Deadeye said). But they're also able to do fine alone, at least IME.
I'd say regardless of whether you add a Raphael or not, you can either take chances with multiple pictus or rehome 1.
