just curious how about severum and a jd?

My opinion on that one is that it would depend heavily on the individual fish. A more mellow JD and an average severum would be fine, or a particularly aggressive severum and a typical JD. The standard fish profile would indicate that the JD would end up being the tank bully and might cause the severum to have less appealing coloration or result in you having to treat for torn fins pretty frequently.

In regards to the original "pbass and oscar", as long as you are able to upgrade on the bass sooner or later you're fine. Oscars should be kept in 75 minimum, but they'll do fine BY THEIRSELVES in a 55 when fully grown.

In other things, some of my personal favorites are green terror, gold severum and their likes. Could always try a bichir too, but they're a little along the same lines as an oscar so long as it's alone or with a fish that stays more towards the top of the aquarium.

Well technically if you have enough filtration you can keep any fish in a tank that is at least as long as it is, but that doesn't mean it will be healthy or happy. An adult oscar needs a tank with no dimensions equal to or less than its length or it will not be able to move around freely. If you end up with a runty oscar, it might be fine, but that's a pretty big risk for the fish.

If you can find one, my dwarf pike cichlid loves her 55 gallon and she's a lot of fun to interact with. Crenicichla saxatilis is what the pet store guessed. They are really full of personality. I need to get new pics of mine up, she's colored up a lot since my last round got posted.

ok so now that i have a general idea of some sweet fish can someone tell me the demensions of a 55g and give me an idea of wat type of filters i should get and other stuff for the tank

thanks for all the help =]

You'll definitely want to go with a canister filter. It'll depend on the fish how much overkill is appropriate, but you will have a hard time getting a filter that is too big in my experience. The general rule I've heard is you want all the water in the tank to be able to cycle through the filter 10 times per hour. I might be wrong on that though. I'm sure that the guys in the filtration threads will be able to help more with this.
