Is this a good 55g sump?

weird the pic didnt get quoted lol ? oh well but anyway if i was to make a sump the way you have the pic you posted, i would have a fine filter pad to catch the smallest particles in the 2nd chamber before it enters the to the peg board on top, and i dont think you really need the last divider before thepump area but i maybe wrong on this maybe someone will chime in on that, and make sure your area under the egg crate is large enough to have your heater or heaters sit under it, unless you plan to hav the pump area big enough to have your heaters in, and bag your media makes it waaay easier to clean if needed (laundry bags form walmart work great)

as for media thats seems totally up to IMO, whatever you like or think works best get it :) but if you have a wet/dry filter your going to want something like pot scrubbies in there as they have a bigger surface area then bio balls, or if it going to have or be fully submerged media anything that works well in a high GPH canister will work egc, seachem pond matrix, fluval biomax, ehiem ceramic hollow rings.. IMO i run seachem pond matrix, and fluval biomax (as it fairly cheap here in ontario where i buy it)

how much head loss do you think you will have ? like what do you think the distance is going to be from the pump to the exit in the tank thats also including the 4 return lines, cuz a pump is rated for say 2900GPH thats at 0' and say at 6' distance it goes down to 1400gph the further away the pump is the lower the GPH is as well... how big of a drain line and return line are you planning to use ?
 
Like Robs says, it depends on the size of your drains and total head in your system. What size are your drains and how many are there?

Your system probably has about 6' of head, so you should get about 2,100GPH from a Max Flo 2900. You would need either two 1.5" drains or one 2" drain to be able to handle that much flow.

The important thing to take into consideration is your drain size because it will determine how many GPH you can run through your sump.

Here's the flow chart for the 2012 Laguna Max-Flo pumps...I circled the GPH you should expect to see from a 2900 @ 6' of head.

1) I'm sorry, but I don't know what you mean by "in the 4 slide". However, sponge/pads will work as long as the water has to go through it before the bio media. As rob said, it could be a filter pad on top of the pegboard over the bio media as well.

2) In this design, most if not all of the bio media will be submerged. There are other designs where it isn't, which has pros/cons to it. There's nothing wrong with this design as long as the media works well submerged. I'd avoid bio balls in a submerged application because I think there are inexpensive options that are better.

yea if you submerge pot scrubbies and bio balls they dont seem to work as well as if they were in a wet/dry unit...if you are going to have a wet/dry system then pot scrubbies are you best buck for the bang ! but if it going to be fully submerged id go with seachem pond matrix of biomax if it was me... what size are the drains you have ? and how many drains are there ? once we know that we can then help chose a proper sized pump to keep up with the draining of water as well as what size of return line is needed for your setup as well... and are you going to just use 4 returns with loc lines ? or a spray bar ?

here are some numbers for the amount of GPH per pvc size from a video from uarujoey on youtube i saw, with these number once we know your drain size and the amount of drains you have we can figure out the proper sized pump for you :) hope this is all helping you lol

.5" - 90gph
.75" - 220gph
1" - 375gph
1.25" - 580gph
1.5" - 840gph
2" - 1500gph
 
There are one out take PVC and that's 2" and 2 1" return PVC's on each over flow box.

well if you have 2 drains that are 2" thats roughly 3000gph it will drain, and with 4-1" returns will flow 1500gph thats going by the number i saw in joey video on youtube ... so i would think the 2900 laguna would be fine you may need a inline valve to dial back the throttle for output tho cuz at 6ft of head it pumping 2140gph which is 640gph more then what would be rated for the 4-1" return lines... now maybe someone has some different numbers for the amount of GPH a pvc pipe allows i dunno im just going by what in his DIY videos and he seems to really know his stuff IMO... or even a 2400 laguna would work as at 6ft of head it pumps 1664gph most likely you can have the valve wide open at that rate damn near...
