Yes you'll need to drill holes in your return line to break the siphon during a power outtage ... And once the power comes back on your pump starts pumping water backinto the tank untill the level is reached were it starts to drian like during regular operation....

yes you need to drill holes to break the siphon when power goes out in all the return lines... i would drill a hole about the same level as were the drian heightis or even better yett o be safe i would do it a tad higher then the drains, but make sure it is under water when the tank is full otherwise water will spray out everywere during reg operation lol

Would these work as the bio

Most anything (non-toxic) with surface area that won't degrade in water would work as bio, but I personally wouldn't use those Dobie sponges/pads. I have read there are lots of people that cut the little plastic sweaters off of them and the sponge is really good for cleaning acrylic, but as bio, I think pot scrubbies would be better.

I would have the same concerns.. I use the pot scrubbies from the dollar store.. they look like a wad of rolled up pantyhose.. lol... they are working great in my sump. I essentially have a large filter sock.. then siliconed glass panes into the tank, my heaters running in the 2" gap formed here ( lots of flow to ideally keep temp as stable as possilble, and to keep the heating elements away from the plastic scrubbies) then it waterfalls over into the main chamber with free floating scrubbies, and my return pump with a pre-filter sponge to keep the scrubbies from it, and extra bio.

biggest thing i learned when i built my sump.. lol silicone doesn't bond acrylic to glass... i forgot this.. and had a blow-out the first time around... i went to a local window place and had some glass cut to size.. cost more then acrylic.. but haven't had a single issue with it. Glass to glass... and acrylic to acrylic....
