I like keeping pet fish solo or in your case with a pleco. You will find the gt female will interact with you more and less distracted by dithers.

But, when I had the JD, this was not the case at all. Very similar size to this one, too. I know, different species, and different fish can have different personalities, anyway, but just throwing an experience I had back for comparison.I like keeping pet fish solo or in your case with a pleco. Ok, thanks! So, this stocking would be good for life? No need to remove fish as they grow? How will nitrates be in this setup? Am I pushing the limits, here, or should it be relatively easy to keep parameters in check? With this number of Rainbows, does it seem fair to add two different species, or is there a reason why I should stick with one?
Sorry for so many questions. I just want to get this right. The skinny size of juvenile Rainbows scares me a bit, but I really love Rainbows, and this tank sounds lovely to me!
Thanks! I understand what nitrates are, and how they build up, just not how quickly. Once per week, I can handle, but I don't want to get into multiple per week.Nitrates are dependent on the volume and frequency of water changes that you are willing to do over a 7 day period. If you can't do more than a 25%-50% once a week, stick to the GT and pleco.

That's a good point, and a definite option. Thanks! You always have the option of getting all the fish you want, and rehoming once it becomes too tedious to keep nitrates below 20ppm.
It will vary from one tank to another, there’s too many variables for anyone to answer this question. Thanks! I understand what nitrates are, and how they build up, just not how quickly. Once per week, I can handle, but I don't want to get into multiple per week.
I understand. I'll just monitor it, and determine an appropriate water change schedule as I need to. I'll probably do about 50% weekly, though. I'll probably not keep plants to start. This is currently not a planted tank, but maybe eventually, who knows. I didn't realize a GT would be tolerant of plants, to be honest. It will vary from one tank to another, there’s too many variables for anyone to answer this question.
Do you plant to keep love plants? How much % of water are you planning to change a week?
A 5-6 inch fish will put out more waste than a 2 inch fish...but as the 2 inch fish grow they too will put out more waste, a pleco is a huge waste producer...so it’s something you will constantly have to monitor until your fish are all mature and your water change schedule to consistent....
I wouldn’t count on the gt being tolerant of plants, but you never know.I understand. I'll just monitor it, and determine an appropriate water change schedule as I need to. Right, I hear you. I'm not new to aquariums, and I'm familiar with water changes. I'm not afraid of them, just don't want to put myself in a position where I have to do several per week.I wouldn’t count on the gt being tolerant of plants, but you never know.
I keep JDs in a fully planted tank!
Filtration will also play a role in how often you do water changes as well.
