Sorry if this has been covered. I am just curious. What does the complete filtration system consist of ? You mentioned an FX5 and are those sand filters ? What kind of turnover does it have ? Please pardon my ignorance especially if this has already been covered. Looks amazing!

No FX5s on this one. There is a 100 gallon sump with sock filters and filter pads. The there is a sand filter followed by the canister filter. I will be adding a type of refugium at some point.

Very cool , thanks ! what kind of turnover are you running with those bigguns ?

Ow, I worked so hard last nightshift, I couldn't sleep, but this thread has made me day.
I still feel awful, but this put a smile on my face, all 30 pages.
Thank you, you're definitely Monsterfishkeeper!

Congratulations, I saw this thread shortly after you started it and just came across it again today. Very nice. Great job you and your hubby did. Those cat's look very happy and should be able to enjoy that tank for quit some time.

So I guess the frickin guy never moved his car...:shakehead:thumbsdow But I like what you did to work with the space you had. If he ever does come to move it he's gonna take a look and be like:OMG::WTF::owned:...Lol:ROFL:. First question were can I get that preformed pond that is hanging above the car? And if you don't mind how much is it new?

Secondly I was also going to ask you about a RTC but you just answered my question a couple of post's ago. I just wanted to add that if you have never owned a RTC, (I don't know if you have or not), they are by far one of the most personable cat's you will have ever owned. I understand why you stayed away from them before so that they didn't eat your smaller fish in your previous tank. But I also understand that you might be inerested in getting a rtc when the time is right. If you do, you won't be sorry, heck he'll probably be your new favorite fish. I have all the same fish you do in the 600 minus the giraffee(never seen one for sale). And my rtc is probably my fav. (Don't get me wrong they are all my favorites, but he is really special). Mine is around two years old and around 20-21inches. I have always kept him by himself, in his very own tank with pristine water conditions. He's never had to compete for food and was always well fed(just not fed till he was going to pop). Super healthy, I'm just saying they don't have to grow as fast as everybody says.....

But once again, you did a wonderfull job setting this up, and your fish are amazing. I can't wait to see them grow and see many more pic's of the progress. As before stated, I would go really easy on their feedings till everything is established and staying constant. Your fish look very healthy and plump, it won't bother them much at all to go with less food for a while. Better safe than sorry. I've read some of your responses and I already know you are ontop of the water parimiters. GREAT JOB!!!

Thanks!

Nope the car never got moved, and now it REALLY won't get moved. Anyways, the pond hanging above the car is a figerglass pond built by a guy who does koi ponds for a living. Due to regulatory rules in California on doing figerglassing, he quit doing that but had this left in his yard and just wanted it out. I paid $99 for it which I think is pretty much a clearance please haul this out of my yard now price. It was never used, but had some dust on it. Can't tell you what normal retail would be.

As for the RTC's, I tear myself away from them when I see them at the shops, especially the large ones. That personality you talk about is very evident. I do REALLY want one. I just am trying to be responsible about it.

My fish are getting fed very small amounts every other day right now, as I want there to be enough load that they are actually making the tank cycle. Without the food, they weren't really putting enough waste into it to get it to actually do anything. LOVE the capacity!

i like how the clown knife was swimming along and then bumped into the wall and almost looked around and was embarassed.

They get going in this tank, and are actually able to swim where they are not constantly looking at the next wall. He probably got going, quit paying attention, and then suddenly realized, "Oh, Crap!" :grinno:

Turn over is 3600 gph (6 times per hour) with the head at 6 feet.

Nice tank .. makes me want to start working on mine but still don't know where to start

You start with what you think you want to keep, then you figure out the optimal tank size, then you teach yourself everything you can about filtering the size tank that you want and maintaining water quality. The tank itself is pretty much the last step.

I feel you on that. Used to do graveyard shifts myself at the animal hospital You work yourself till you think your totally exhausted, but then you get home and you can't get yourself to lay down and sleep. I think maybe it is coming out of work to a rising sun, the madhouse of people trying to get to work, the smell of coffee everywhere, and the HUGE amount of caffeine consumed to make it through the crazy night. Glad my tank could provide you some relaxing entertainment.

There's a great deal of detail in this thread, more than I can follow. I am just really impressed by the amazing animals that you have to put it there--what beautiful fish!

Do you have any names for your amazing fish?

The giraffe cat is Bernard... I don't know why, but he came home, and within the first two days Bernard came into my mind and it stuck. He is the only one with an actual name currently.

I would love for all these guys to have names, but nothing has stuck for these guys. I'd love some suggestions to see if we have anymore luck (I'm notoriously picky, so don't feel bad if I shoot down all the suggestions). :D So here is a bit of back story/ biography on these guys if you want to throw something out there...

The RTCxTSN we won at the 2008 SoCal meet as a 3.5" adorable little baby. Actually, we won a bichir, but this little boy had the RTCxTSN and wanted to trade. I knew what that little guy was going to be, had already discussed starting with big cats with my husband, and so we opted to trade with him. I personally think he is a great looking hybrid and got the best of both species. He's got the fantastic RTC personality and tail, and the added looks of the TSN. He is currently just called "The Hybrid". I've tried to change this as I just love him, and would really like to give him a great name that fits him. But, nothing seems to stick.

The big TSN I have for some reason decided is a 'she'. I already have a discus named "Big Mama" or that would have been a great one for her. I rescued her at a 15" from a 60 gallon tank piled with random catfish.

The little TSN we got the same day as the hybrid. There is something wrong with this little guy. He's not growing as fast as everyone else, and, as he has gotten larger, it is obvious that there is something wrong with conformation. He does not have that the normal slope from the dorsal fin to the front of his nose. Instead he's flat across the back. He doesn't swim nearly as well since I don't think he can see over his nose very well. He's a nice little guy though.

The Pangasius hypothalamus catfish was rescued from a 40 gallon tank. He's very alone and wants to try to school with everyone. ( I really do want to get him at least one buddy as he is a schooling fish by nature). However, for now, he is the tag along that nobody really wants hanging around.

The two ripsaws I got as tiny spotted blue babies. These two friendly behemoths are inseparable garbage disposals. Totally gentle giants.

The Gold Knife I got after drooling at him for a couple months at a LFS. No one was taking him home for some reason. My husband and I were finally in the position to give him a home, so we scooped him up. I think he's lovely, interesting, and is a super gentle hand feeder.

So, yeah. If you think you've got a good name for them let me know. So you can get a sense of what I like, some of the other fish I have are/were: Norbert, Kelso, Captian Jack, Frank the Tank (Frankie), Big Mama, Little B@$+@rd, Scooter the Travel Goldfish, etc. :D
