Could a gold gourami work?

I think so but I don't know a ton about the species or their max size, do a little google searching about them to make sure

ya that'd be fine then. just watch for fin nips and whatnot.

What about gar Charachins and African leaf fish.

personally I would go with some smaller SD's or some tiger barbs or any of the Dawkinsia species
with some bottom dwellers pictus cats or some loaches are good choices
then something at the top maybe some rainbows or danios
