adding more fish to my 125? (other post was ignored)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
one oscar in a 125 with a few raphaels? well thats very genrous. that could be done in a 75g.
No, the nitrates were hitting 20ppm in the 75. That's why I upgraded. Because my goal is to have maximum health for my fish. Not to shove as many fish into a tank as I can and hope they make it. African brown knives do reach a foot, but the typical mature specimen (from what I understand, I haven't kept them) is more like 10". That's still 90" worth of skinny fish to reckon. Of course, in your tank with its accumulated metabolic byproducts, they probably won't get as big as they should.

You do a lot of water changes and that is great. Just how much does it take to keep the nitrates below 20ppm, each week? No bait in this question, just wondering.

Overstocking was never a good idea. If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you do it, too?

Adding Exodons would be an unethical way to thin out your stock. It could take many agonizing minutes for them to rip the jag up...but in the end a tank with a small school of exodons has a much better long-term prognosis than your current ward.

lol african knives rarely if ever get over 8 inches. you guys are mixing up your knife species.

what happened to jdm and overstocking...is that fad finally over?

anyways, my tank looks quite bare right now

It was never a fad and should have never of been one if it was.

i do 50% every sunday. hook up the python while im doing yard work. water changes are not some big event if you have one of those.

that yellow fish in a flowerhorn.

to be very honest, i was thinking of re-doing my stock if i see plans of the flowerhorn accepting the jag as a mate when he matures.

im not trying to breed more hybrids per say...i just want to really nice looking fish with all the breeding interaction.

if i could do the jag and FH with 4 gold tinfoil barbs..i think that would provide more of a look that i would like. but they eat plants=\

Cool. I do 50% on the weekend, too. The clincher here is this:
My tank has 41" of mature, lightly fed fish. My 50% change brings the nitrates from about 15ppm down to about 5ppm, where good long-term health can be attained.
Your tank has 140" of fish. It's downright impossible to believe that a 50% change once a week is sufficient to keep nitrates anywhere near low enough for proper immune function, growth and so forth. So, where's your magic wand? How do you keep your nitrates and other metabolic byproducts so low with a stock so high? I mean, is there an algae scrubber in your sump?

female jin kang flowerhorn (adult) 10"
juvenila male jaguar cichlid (managuense) 16"+
pair of pink convicts 5" x2 = 10"
adult rainbow shark 5"
adult gold chinese algae eater 9"
adult featherfin syno 8"
9 african knives. 9x 12" = 82"

That's 140" of fish. And many of them are known gluttons. A 125g might be fine for just the jag. Or the flowerhorn and the convicts as a trio. Or marginally okay for just the nine knives. But the cram job you've posted has scared many away. I don't want to be rude and that's why I'm ending this paragraph here.

.

my tank has 140 inches of fish? lol. you listed absolute max sizes for everything. thats like naming the record caught fish as the average adult size. an on top of that, you didn't even go back and correct your misinformation about the knives.

perhaps your nitrates are so high to do bad tap water quality.

you're kind of a nasty person though lol. go out and enjoy your sunday and just :chillpill:

i appreciate constructive criticism from the other members definitely. just very curious as to why everyone else has "overstocked" tanks and it is ok for them. they get nothing but compliments.

i think its because there stock is already as is and they aren't asking for suggestions on more....

or because they say its a "growout" only to never get that 500g tank they were supposedly getting.

either way...im off to get some plants

African Brown knives can reach a foot. They usually don't in aquariums because of tanks like yours where they are crammed and slammed and prevented from growing.

I like how you still refuse to admit how high your nitrates are.

My nitrates are great. 5 to 15 ppm without serious planting is outstanding. My tap has 0 nitrates, so it all comes from the tank's inhabitants.

The reason nobody wanted to respond to your post should be even more evident to you now. You have your fingers in your ears and you're screaming, "La, la la!". How is reason supposed to reach you?

I fail to see how I've been rude to you. You ask the question, I tell you the truth, you cry about it. If you don't want the truth, don't ask for it.
