To help protect your plants, especially floating plants like moss and elodea, you can use a plastic shower caddy/suction cup container, whatever it's called at the surface. Just stick on, put the plants in and ta-daa, safe place for certain plants. I've got one with water lettuce popping out of it going on right now. Water lettuce is a voracious consumer of nitrates. I've got it in...yep all my tanks at the moment.

it sounds like a great idea but im not sure exactly how to go about it. i googled pics of shower caddys. can you take a pic of yours?or link me to a site

Something like this. Big Lots has them for $2.00 right now. This one doesn't really have enough holes, but the ones in the store are covered all the way around for good circulation.
 
imo, I would get rid of all but one of your knives. They take up a lot of your bio-load and you don't see them (which I believe you want an active tank from your post). This would free up some options of what you could stock with.
