Adjustment period? (new L264)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
If you do it I personally would have another tank on hand in case you have to remove one, and I would keep an eye on things especially after the tank light goes off. I personally think it will be a risk. But again, I am far from a professional. I would invest in a set of lunar lights BEFORE I tried that combination because I have a feeling that at night will be when the crap hits the fan.

I don't have another tank so removing one is not an option, unless to put it out of its misery...

Honestly blue lighting isn't on the top of my to-get list, even though I do want it eventually. But I've already got a list on Drs. Foster/smith to stock up on supplies thats gotten higher than originally intended, so blue lights will have to wait. With high ceilings in my 1br/ba townhouse, the kitchen lighting does well to light up the tank enough for me to spot plecos (but not bright enough to keep them hidden, this is how I watch my L-264 after aquarium lights out). So back to the point...I'll be able to witness carnage without blue lights for now.

When you say it'll be a risk, do you mean toward the L200 or for all of them? Are you saying I shouldn't mix the L200 with any carnivores? or just not with 3 of them?

If you absolutely don't recommend putting an L200 with the previously mentioned carnivores, is my tank big enough (6ft 125g) for 3 carnivores or should I stop at 2?

I'm going to hold off till next week instead of buying on a whim tonight..

I am not going to say you absolutely should'nt do it. I think it MAY work. but there is a definate possibility that the others could beat the snot out of the L-200, hence my suggestion of another tank. If you are determined to try it I would suggest looking on CL for a cheap ten gallon so if agression does occur you can get it out of the main tank until you can get rid of it. Otherwise you could end up with a dead fish by the time you are able to get him out to take to the lfs. Once they start to fight it will stay ugly until one is removed. I think your tank is big enough for three agressive plecos you are talking about but probably not for life(should be OK for several years I would think).

Might just forget about an L200 ...

I'm thinking about getting 3-5 EBJD juvies sometime in the next month or so. I have no experience with EBJDs but I know they are sensitive fish. Should I be concerned about the carnivore plecos inflicting damage/over stressing them/etc? Or do the plecos just get aggressive towards each other?
Thanks

I have an EBJD in a grow out tank. He is just as agressive as my GT when it was that size. They are known to catch parasites at small sizes and are sensitive to poor water quality. It is suggested to run a UV sterilizer in the tank I believe until they are up to 4". I personally might be a little worried with the high PH you have, but I think you can get better advice on that subject in the cichlid sub-forum than from me.

Got psuedacanthicus?:D

Take a look at the armor on his sides. I personally think you are wise to hold off on the L-200.

I'll have to wait till I get home to check out that picture.

At this point (and this seems to be changing daily) im leaning toward 1 of 2 routes.
carnivores
1) L14 + L114
or a more peaceful
2) L200 + L239(or other non-carnivorous/aggressive species)

Would the 2nd route work out alright with the current L264 I have? That would be just 1 carnivore pleco in a 6 ft. I'm not sure if you weren't recommending the L200 just because I was considering additional carnivores, or if I shouldn't do it at all even with just an L264.

To begin with I was'nt recommending it because of the dietary differences. I have gotten the impression that you feel comfortable attempting to work around that issue. Next I believe was when we discussed adding more carnivores such as the L-114, and I personally believe the L-114 and L-200 MAY work for a while until the L-114 gets some size on the L-200. But my 3"er is IMO more agressive than the 11"er so that tells me that you MAY run into issues before the L-114 outgrows the L-200 all depending on the personal attitude of the L-114.

Disclaimer: I have never owned an L-200 or L-239. I also have not owned an L-264, but it is a leporacanthicus and I am using my experience with my L-091 as a guide.

I would think the L-239 would be too small for it to hold it's own against a full grown L-264. I believe a full grown L-264 would end up bullying a full grown L-200.

To be perfectly honest I recommend getting 2 more carnivorous plecos since you already have the one. Or I would dump the L-264 off and get the more non agressive species. One or the other. I think mixing the ideas will create problems long term.

Another thing I wanted to go back and talk about was the extra tank thing. I was'nt meaning to set up a permanant tank, but having one on hand for emergencies. I would still recommend this if you go with all carnivorous/agressive plecos. Actually, even a five gallon bucket and an airstone could probably work in a jam. Being that you live in hurricane territory I would suggest some battery operated air pumps too(could also be used in the "emergency bucket"). If you bought a tank you could use it for a quarantine tank though. OK I am just running at the mouth now! I work third and have'nt gone to bed yet. GOOD NIGHT MFK!

Yeahhh I think I'm just going to be happy that I can find the 2 carnivorous species I like most (L14 and 114) and get those, as I don't want to remove the L-264, I like it :D

As for the extra tank thing, I do have an old 145gph powerhead + an old air pump rated for 20g (also have a battery powered air pump..), and a 5 gallon bucket. But, I don't have any filters for a 5g bucket :grinno: In an emergency I could use the bucket to remove something and keep it alive long enough to donate to the LFS, but thats about it I think.

Thanks again for all the input! Probably going to order the L14/114 Thursday so that I can watch 'em acclimate over the weekend. Will definately be posting pics asap.

Placed the order today so I can't change my mind anymore :nilly:

1 L14 and 1 L114 incoming Friday :D

;)Nice. I suggest when you get them you put them in a bucket and drip acclimate them SLOWLY. That high ph would scare me to throw them right in from the bag. I just use a piece of airline and tie a knot in it to slow it down to a slow drip.
