African Cichlid Videos Post here

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah its super hard to tell male and female. I never saw them lay the eggs on the substrate so i never did know male from female, i only had suspicions. Its good your getting the rockwork, they are cave dwelling. I kept mine successfully with non aggressive mbuna and also the haps, but my haps were not huge when i got them so i dont know if full grown haps would eat them if you bought young ones. I suspect they would try LOL. For as delicate and pretty as they are i have to say pound for pound they are one of the toughest fish i have kept. Had one corner and beat the hell out of my 6 inch male venustus (brichardi was 2 inches LOL) they had the entire tank of haps and peacocks, all 18 fish crammed into a 1 foot corner. Mean buggers when paired off and not in their own tank (then they are super peaceful) Plus they can take care of themselves when alone.

Again, not my tanks, just great setups IMO.

This is just an amazing tank, really like how it is setup with the open bottom, would like to make one like this myself if I knew how it was done.

Cool tank huh. i have seen them with african cichlids and discus, and long finned goldfish. some others as well.

If you want to understand how they did it get a glass baking dish and a 3 litter bottle soda bottle, fill up the bowl and fill up the bottle, turn the bottle upside down and place it inside the bowl of water. The same idea as the automatic dog watering bowls.

There is a guy , i think in singapore that has amazing discus , african cichlids and even a massive outdoor koi pond. The koi pond is even larger than alot of peoples patios and he has those upside down tanks in all of them. Gorgeous. The discus ones are cool cause the fish are pretty good sized and still go up into the glass tank on top. Its on utube under african cichlids, then you click on the "see all of their videos" and the discus and koi pond comes up.

Only thing about the tank design that had me puzzled was the air bubbles. I know how it would work, like with the bottle and the bowl example you gave, but if you put a straw in the bottle while it is upside down and blow air into the bottle, it will displace the water and eventually emty the bottle and over flow the dish. Only thing I could think of was that the air pump was in the tom of the tall tank and it just recycled it back down to the bottom. Very cool setups though, I have seen all his vids, very cool idea, not good for jumping fish though, you'd find them on the floor the next morning.

I think I got it now. The tank sticking out of the water isn't open at the top. Thanks for the help. :headbang2

exactly. tank sticking up is a closed top open bottom, its submerged into the low flat " open pond looking part. that keeps the water in the raised part from all coming out. I really like them but i think they are extremely expensive and looks like a contractor would be required to build it lol. not a diy project for the novice or faint of heart. but if you had skills.....That guys outdoor koi pond is worth looking up and viewing. sorry idont have the link anymore. i can check around this weekend and see if i can find. it. if i do i will post it.
