africans vs americans

people that say that new worlds don't have a lot of color are crazy (of course, a lot are drab, admittedly). There are only a few old worlds that I like, such as different compressiceps, calvus, some tropheus, fronts, and emperors, but I would only really keep fronts and emperors. Other than that, it's new world all the way.

Yeah I agree

I've kept both kinds... I didn't delve to deep into the american so I had cichlids like a jack dempsey, convicts, etc... I've had all types of Africans like Mbuna, Haps from victoria, and a lot of various cichlids from Tanganyika... So I'd have to Say Africans (Mainly Tanganyika) and then for Americans I'd love to have a Geophagus tank with discus and apistogrammas... You just can't beat the diversity and personality of Tanganyika cichlids

yeah they're all great for diffrent reasons

I'm setting up a new 125 to move my CA/SAs into and then I'm going to put my Africans in the old 125 I have. It should be fun to have two big tanks for both. I'm looking forward to a tank filled with haps and peacocks with a few calvus and one or two polleni. The problem with most new worlds is their size limits how many you can own and next thing you know you have multiple tanks and are moving fish here and there to deal with aggression issues. I would argue though that new worlds have more color and more diversity in their color, more variations.

I was wondering the same thing earlier in my fish keeping days, had mbuna which were crazy all over the tank little guys (my first real fish I had kept); bought some bigger ones at an auction (adult sized, my saulosi were still juvies), and everything went to crap basically. Wasn't satisfied with the tank, sold all my mbuna and started getting into new world.

Got several JDs, decided I'd rather have a GT, so I sold the JDs and got me a GT, assuming he'd be personable...He's grown quite a bit since I got him, but he's still shy of me, had him about half a year now. Every time I walk by the tank he sprints for his cave, sucks man. Went new world for the personality...my mbuna would come to the top of the tank every time I walked by like little puppies, my GT won't. The Firemouth and convict will, but they're only there to keep the GT company and bring something to life in my tank.

Thinkin about goin back to mbuna, even my tang tank (calvus and shellies) greets me when I walk into my bedroom...feelsbadman. Thought I'd have more personality with new world, don't believe all the hype. Unless it takes years...took my saulosi a week to be at the top nippin my fingers thinkin it was food. Jus sayin

I personally like both. I currently keep a 10" Jack Dempsey and a 9" Red Devil with close to 30 peacocks and haps in a 220 gallon. I actually like this setup because there is virtually no aggression in the tank. The jack is the dominant fish in the tank with the red devil being next. The jack and red devil for some reason get along great. I have a 10" Fossorochromis rostratus and a 9" Dimidiochromis kwinge that can get aggresive towards its tankmates but because the two CA cichlids are more dominant than them it helps to keep them in line.

I like CA/SA cichlids because of how they interact with me and each other, they seem to be more intellectual then africans. I say this because my expireance with them has shown me that they knew it was MY hand that fed, not some stranger walking up to view them, and i like how they are almost trainable... Africans look awesome though, especially a tank full of peacocks or mbuna's they are so active and visually pleasing. I love all fish, but i have to go with Americans.
