i agree. i could care less if its wild or next gen. i booght a f1 festae from rapps along time ago and still have it. you can see it in my avatar. i then bought a mutt fesate which i eventually sold to my friend. his looks every bit as good as mine. ive seen dovii that are mutts look just as nice or nicer as some peoples w/c ones. i dont see what the big craze is. your w/c fish isnt any better then my 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th generation fish. thats my opion on the whole f0/f1 whoopla like the other guy stated id be excited about it if i were the one in the amazon collecting it

Oh I understand the need for wild fish in the hobby. Just not something that I am into..dont have time or money to spend on them, or wait for fish in mail, or deal with parasites, or deal with them not eating pellets, or deal with the fact that their personalities might suck or they might be wayy too aggressive for some passive fish that are tank raised.

What bothers me is looking at vendors...seeing how often they get in new fish, how many different kinds. I could care less about people, they have brains and the ability to take care of themselves...im an animal person and just feel for the fish. Maybe I am naive or just dont know, but I have seen so many good looking fish come from even petco or an lfs that are not near WC or F anything.

cchcc-oftentimes the places that have the best animals/ecosystems are the ones where the people could care less.

True.... true. Too bad isn't it? Seems some in CA are getting it together (Costa Rica, Belize). Some others are far from it. The whole "eco-tourism" thing is great for our fish!

Yeah, think how ridiculous it would sound on some bird forum (I'm sure there are plenty!)..... "Wild Caught Parakeet sp. 'Mytenyearold'sbedroom'".....or "Little Known Black-Toed Mallard sp. 'Myneighborsyard'"

It's all about soakinig up the reflected glory... Gets pretty absurd after a while.

I'll tell you what I'd like to see. It would be cool to see before-after photos over the years from various collection sites. Someone like Rusty or that other guy in Tampa probably have some incredible photos.

The "wild caught" tag is the new marketing ploy, the cichlid guys have taken a page away from the flowerhorners. If you can make something exclusive and put a fancy name on it, it is more valuable. If they could call a dovi a "king's court jester blue dovi" and sell it for twice as much that would be great. Most cichlid folks are not that gullible, but by calling it wild, and putting a collection point with it, they give it exclusivity and that they can find a market for.

How many times in the past have you seen gaudy flowerhorns selling for 500 bucks and a beautiful dovi go for 25 bucks. Everybody needs to make some money, free enterprise develops new methods of marketing. That is what we have here.....marketing to the newer less experienced cichlid fans.

One more thing to add, consider this, everybody remembers when the stingray was the hot fish right? Remember the marketing for them, it was ingenious, they actually said captive bred SHOULD be more expensive than WC and were preferable. They threw in feeding, conservation, temperament and a few other factors why captive was better than wild.

Now we have a different ploy for the cichlids. We are a funny bunch of folks. We want wild cichlids and captive rays. What will we pine for next?

It is all marketing......

That is a nice thought, but, how do you keep them in a tank at home? Those Petsmart fish had to come from somewhere. . . ALL of the fish in any pet store, breeding facility or other came from wild fish at some point. If you want to take this point of view, the fish in the "puppy-mill" situation probably have it better there than in ANY hobbiests tanks. A fish farm is generally made up of ponds or large vats or any combination of both, in a lot of cases the water is turned over completely at least daily (like being in a river) and they are fed the best of the best of prepared foods. . . unhealthy and unhappy breeding stock don't produce offspring.

Take that as my opinion as a hobbiest, not as a vendor. To be totally honest, I don't fully understand the whole "I gotta have the wild one", unless there are no choices, then the domesticated (F1-2-3-4-etc) are fine by me, as long as they represent the natural fish.

If your are breeding fish and you need a WC every now and then to add depth to your gene pool, that I think is logical. But to say, and I quote one member, "I will not keep anything but F0)" is just a tad ridiculous. I still have pm's from that member (I use that term literally) and he said some hurtful things to me, I was sad..........for about three seconds.

Weak minds and losse purse strings=a good marketer will rape every time.
