All my catfish are going to die.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Update: I lost the new introduced catfish sometime thru the night . luckily he was moved to a 40 breeder to he didnt spike the ammonia level in my 220.

All of my catfish were moved back to the 220. I did a 70% WC again last night, kicked temps up and added medication. What ever signs of disease they had are going away, there appetite is back in full swing, I am very happy with the results.

LESSON LEARNED: Qaurentine your fish, big or small. DO NOT be lazy.

I'm still baffled as to what the problem was but im more than happy to see it go

R.I.P.
18" RTC (Sherman)

Never thought i'd have to pull a dead catfish out of a tank.. was really depressing

you should not treat your cats with salt they are very sensitive to it and not in a good way as far as your cat I lost my red tail cat(Quagmire) about a year and a half ago and he had the same sore spots that yours had I also lost a marble cat the same way with the marble it was on and off for about three months they would come and go I had a TSN in the same tank with the marble and it never developed any of the symptoms the marble I finally euthanized sorry for your loss Im glad your other cats are fine

Aquarium salt is perfectly fine for catfish. I've used it a ton of times, as have many others, and it has no negative effects whatsoever. What support do you have for it being bad for them? Did you just decide that it was bad for no reason?

As a kinda semi update, I was over at Mikes house a few hours ago, and all his old catfish are doing fantastic, back to their normal habits, just as Mike said earlier. I fed them all a few talapia fillets, and its just so lucky that this didn't end much worse. The one RTC in the tank has a 1 or two little strange sores on its head, but they are already closing up and healing well.

Mike was very lucky.

Based on how it's tail looked it looked like it was getting beat up by another fish, pretty badly at that. Also I wouldn't do 70% water changes...that is too much. 50% is the safe and recommended water change amount unless something desperate is needed.

What sort of substrate are you using or is it a bare bottom tank? Decor in the tank?

Also I would never keep my cats at 86 degrees for prolonged periods unless you had a ton of aeration. I keep all of my shovelnose between 76-82 and when it's above 80 I keep the water level down so my filter returns are putting extra o2 back in the water by returning them a few inches above the water line.

Sorry for your loss. The sores could have been anything from internal parasites of some sort to scrapes/cuts from decor in the tank.
