and I'm not an expert in catfish, so someone jump in about this, but I do know that when they are very stressed out, they excrete toxins...correct me if I'm wrong.

Most likely what happened is simply a bad chain of events. You said the rtc regurgitated on the ride home. That in itself is very bad let alone in an unfiltered unheated small space. He was basically inside of his own stomach. All the digestive juices were in a confined space with the cat, I don't know what the ph/ammonia reading would have been at this moment. Probably very similar to you taking a hydrochloric acid bath. This is enough to let any parasite/bacteria take hold. Once the now becoming sick fish was introduced into the tank it could easily start affecting the other fish. Just a sick fish is enough to stress out the rest.

Sorry about your loss. It always sucks to lose a fish. :(

PS. Aquarium salt is perfectly fine for your fish. If you had problems with the salt you put in your tank you should probably check the label and make sure it wasn't marine salt.

Wow. Really good point. I didn't even think of that. The acid from his stomach could have possibly eaten away his slime coat, or a part of it, allowing something more serious to take hold like you said. I'm putting my money on this now as the problem.

Hey everyone this was my fish and this sucks to see what happened to him, this makes me very upset. I have pics of the catfish moments before shipping and he was in PERFECT condition which I will post here later...the pictures you showed seem to be exactly what the person I quoted is saying...you told me there was a marble catfish in there that was on his ass the whole time-you should have paid more attention to that, especially if he was getting attacked.

Second, I asked you what tank he was going in and I remember you saying a 300 gallon-had I have know you were putting him in a 220 with all the big cats you have in that crammed tank, I wouldn't have sold it to you as there was someone else interested with an empty 300 that could have taken him.

That being said, I'm glad your fish are fine.

**** happens. I wouldnt have drove 4 straight hours round trip to meet you to pick up a catfish if i didnt know what i was doing.

Let me start by saying YOU FED THE CATFISH PRIOR TO SHIPMENT? Had i known i wouldnt have even wasted my time driving 4 hours to get ur fish. You want to critique my husbandry yet the fish you sold me that was in your possession for its entire life had pretty severe gill curl on its right gill plate( Its a picture from the front and hard to tell but the third picture i posted on the first page you can see how far it protrudes on the right side), I have better pictures of it, but the pictures are when he was dead. I did'nt make this thread to complain about the condition the RTC was in, I made it to get help. Obviously im upset about the loss as well but get real. i spent over 60 dollars in gas and tolls not to mention the fact that my time alone is precious with me attending my 4th year of med school and having a job and such i dont have time to take a ****. Please dont come on my thread and act like you knew exactly what you were doing when you gave me a fish with a full belly to ship. I got home and the water was yellow with 8-10 small chunks of talapia. You told me you fed him a very small piece of food prior to giving me him i call BS. and the small Gill curl you claimed (barely noticable according to your ad ) was rather severe. Joe M was at my house when i brought him home, and can hold me to my word.

I find it pretty funny that the pictures you posted clearly hide the right side of the fish which had the gill curl. If posting pictures of a dead 18" RTC is necesary I will to prove my claims. I had absolutely no problem with the original owner arowfan, even giving him updates on the whole situation that could have very easily killed all my fish. The morning I found him dead i messagesd him 3 times with my apologies and I got no reply, stop being a baby, these things happen.

I put the catfish in my 220 with 4 other catfish none of which were near his size get over it. had the 300 been capable / ready for the catfish I would have moved him there lucky i didnt because there was OBVIOUSLY a problem with the fish.

I posted this thread in a panic. Had I known this would have dragged out like this I would'nt have even bothered. The problem was a the introduced fish I'm no idiot. My catfish are finally recovering and Look fantastic again. None of them fight, and nothing stops there feeding response. You live and learn.

Q Tank every fish dont be lazy.

Mod's I in no way shape or form meant to offend anyone with my words. To be completely honest I want the thread closed as it is producing nothing positive, only bringing up conflicting remarks and such. And I am still a little upset about the whole situation to be honest.

I doubt its a fault of husbandry. The explanation where the rtc was melted by his own stomach fluid sounds the most plausible and i think that is exactly what happened.

This is what i am writing it off as. It's the only plausible explanation, he could have been sitting in his own vomit for 2 full hours.

I don't think arowfan fed him right before you picked him up. In his pics his stomach doesn't look just fed, just healthy. As these cats get bigger their digestive tracts slow down and take a couple days in between feedings. Which is why we need to keep feeding to a minimum once they are past the juvie stage, and down to 2 or 3 times a week at adult size.

I had woken up very early that morning and fed him 3-4 pieces of tilapia, I think 10 is you being drastic; I've never had a problem such as this when transporting my fish.
The water was yellow-yes because I have blackwater extract in almost all my tanks.
As for the gill curl, when I bought the fish at 3-4 in, it already had signs of it starting-was crammed in a tiny *** tank and wasn't in the best shape with other fish picking on it, I bought it becuase I felt bad for it.
As for the pics, those were the only two I was able to snap, and I clearly stated that he had it in my ad-so I don't know what your trying to pull here. :screwy:
Forgive me for feeling upset and not answering your last txt message as this was a dear pet of mine.
And yes, I know, crap happens.

I just have to ask, but how does you being upset about the RTC dying have anything to do with you not texting him back? You obviously had no intention of it, or you wouldn't have had to explain yourself on here, because after you got over your grieving you would have texted back, but you didn't. And he said he found 8-10 chunks of tilapia, not that you FED him 8-10pieces of tilapia.

Agree with OP Mods should close this, nothing good is coming of it, and it is now completely off topic.
