Am i a bad MFK?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Per Wiki, In Internet slang, a troll is someone who posts inflammatory, extraneous, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as a forum, chat room, or blog, with the primary intent of provoking readers into an emotional response or of otherwise disrupting normal on-topic discussion.

I don't think you meant to, but given that you only have a 55G, the notion of trading a fish that grows 2' long for fish that can grow 4' (GATF) and 7'+ (Pima) is such a bad idea that it came across as if you were "trolling."

Like Pacumom mentioned, upgrading to large tanks is not easy or cheap. In my opinion, it's best to buy fish you can care for given your current resources. There are plenty of fish you can keep in a 55G, but a PBass, GATF or Pima are not on that list.

AGTF = GATF (Goliath African Tiger Fish)? Just wanted to make sure we are talking about the same fish.

Giant Snakeheads are some of my favorite fish too, but I doubt you will ever see them in any CA shop since they are illegal here.

It's cool that you like the true monsters in the hobby, but realize that the setups required to keep these species will cost upwards of tens of thousands of dollars and hundreds of dollars per month to maintain. Responsible fishkeeping starts with knowing your limits and selecting stock that you can appropriately care for. In my opinion, buying monster growing fish before having a monster tank is irresponsible; life has a way of getting in the way of people's grand plans and when that happens it never ends well for these awesome creatures.

Edit: I just re-read what I wrote and I see that it might be interpreted as a jab at my friend Pacumom, but that was not my intention at all; I agree with her post 100% and it's a great example of what can be involved with "upgrading."
Agree 100%. Very well put, and PacuMom is my hero.

Alex,
I did not take it as a jab. Major upgrading can be very very difficult unless you have unlimited funds and can pay for someone else to do all the work. If it is a big DIY project like ours is, life can in the way. There are things more important that fish and fish tanks such as a major, terminal illness and now a very recent death in our family. Big DIY builds do not always go as fast or the way we want them to go. Sometimes we have to reprioritize our life. In hindsight, the day we moved the fish into the 300 gallon tank, we should have purchased their big tank. If we had done that, they would have been moved into a big tank over three years ago.

thank you, very well put

Dude you will need a monster of a tank if you plan to house those type of fish. A 55g could be used as a grow out tank for fry.

agreed you need a big tank if you want these fish.

as some mentioned upgrading for big tanks is not easy for some people, I find it easy myself but if you have never kept a big tank or worked on one its very confusing and scary + the costs are quite high. if you really want the fish I say get it but make sure u can upgrade dont just say you can. I know very well its hard to find certain fish and when you find them u want them. I had many fish I shouldn't of had in 15g tanks and now they are all in the right sized tank but if you cant afford the right sized tank you should not buy the fish.

Let's talk about the other part of things. Do you understand the cost involved in feeding a fish that large and do you understand the cost in tank/ heating/ filtering. Everything for a 500 gallon tank. Tank alone will cost as much as a simple car. And monthly bills from everything is allot also. And the overall space requirement for a huge tank. It's No wonder most people never even get a tank larger than 150 gallons.

disagree here, if you setup the tank right it wont cost much to run. my 550 G costs under 15$ a month to run. Food yes it will cost a lot for big tanks.
