yes I just spoke to mike at h2o here in nyc and he said to just use all ceramic bio media in all three trays in the fx's and not to use any amonia remover and doe a water change

I AGREE TO THAT IN TOTAL. THATS WHAT I DID, CHECK THE AMMONIA AND NITRITE EVERY DAY FOR A WEEK OR TWO. WATER CHANGE EVERY DAY 60-80 GALLONS. THE BACTERIA WILL BUILD UP FAST AND YOU WILL SEE NO AMMONIA OR NITRITE IN TIME.

Adding anything that increases the pH at this point is a very bad idea. Yes, crushed coral will help stabilize the pH, but ammonia increases in toxicity as pH increases. So, in summation, adding a substance that increases pH along with his elevated ammonia levels and higher tank temps, is a recipe for disaster.

Good point on the PH with elevated ammonia, Slipped my mind that his ammonia was high.

I had a similar issue and after adding the CC my ammonia shot down.

Thanks for clearing that up.

boycott any chemical use in your tank, what kind of filtration do you have? i have a hob and i use the diy filter cartriges one with charcoal one with the white stuff for amonia

white stuff for ammonia? (ceramic rings?)

If you use "white stuff" ammonia remover then you are using chemicals to alter your ammonia in the tank. it doesn't actually remove ammonia either it just stabilizes the toxic part.

the ceramic rings or bio ball type things are the best because then the chemicals are naturally altered.

i didnt use it in one of my fx's but in the other i did and now i see this problem so i'm removing them

Correct. The "white stuff" chemically bonds the free ammonia ions in the water. It has a limited point of saturation though. In other words, with a tank that is saturated with ammonia, the "white stuff" will become saturated in a very short period of time and subsequently lose it's usefulness.

lets say for a Fluval Filter, What would you guys put in the trays?

To make it more efficent?

yes this is a better question lets break it into one simple answer what would you guys use in two fluval fx5's from top tray to bottom tray.....
