Amphilophus Citrinellus vs Amph. "Red Isletas"

Oh okay, I mean In your experience do you need to separate amph pairs during spawning?

No. Just give her somewhere to go where he cant get to. I use pvc pipes. She fits into a 2.5" he doesnt. You can also use a small cave. All of my Amphs have been great parents. With the exception of my WC male RD, he can be an ass to his females. But still, a great parent.

After raising and spawning pairs both species I'll say this. Both are quite similar to one another. My isletas were more mellow and tolerated tankmates quite well. My midas was a bruiser who bit, attacked the glass consistently (always 'on') and gained the adoration of friends and family. Very outgoing. The isletas were great but in the end, they left me wanting for something more. The pealing process that midas undergo is quite interesting as well.... If you can find a nice strain that peals after hitting maturity rather than before. MIDAS!!!!!

never spawned any amphilophus as of yet. the best chance of a well bonded pair is to grow out a group from a small size though.

That's what I figured but they're so darn expensive for a group haha

Good idea, might use a clay pottery piece (not a pot, bigger shape).

Of course, right when I think I'm completely set on the isletas, someone comes in and reminds me of how awesome midas are...

That is what I am trying to do with my pair except I am using clay pots. So far my female hasn't really used them to escape from the male. She likes to use the driftwood in the tank instead. That is why I bought my isletas as a male and female instead of growing them out. When I grew up my midas they were so close in size it was hard for her to find things that only she could hide in.
