The safty factor drop that the calculators are assuming isn't due to the length it's due to deflection.. which again we are able to eliminated with bracing the deflection that would still be present is going to gradually build but it would take several hundred if not thousands of feet before it would be something to consider

This is the flaw in your reasoning... a top brace does not eliminate deflection, it only minimizes it. The higher the tank, the less it minimizes this variable. At two feet deep, the extra length is a factor.

I stand by my statements.

No actually thats the flaw in your reasoning... the deflection doesn't change based on length but height so since we have already calculated the height and the deflection created by it and we have taken away the risk of greater deflection we no longer have enough of a change to consider.

all research ive done agrees with BL, length doesnt matter because i will have a brace up top every 20" so technically its like a series of tanks, stuck together and each only being 32x20"...... that might not sound correct reading it, but i couldnt think of a better way to put it on the computer

Ok mind you i am horrible at sketchup. the brown is 2x4 :D and you can kinda see the front will have double 2x4s and the black is plywood

I just realized that AndrewMacks Threads are Great for my post count  :grinno:

i second that.

Seriously I still think that he needs to realize that no matter how much he says it won't happen his kid is gonna bang on the glass. So the extra thickness will be like a sigh of relief. Defiantly go with the thickest you can afford not the bare minimum you think you can get away with. Also you are going to have to move this tank in the next couple of years so a stronger glass is better for that as well.

Im not trying to be rude so dont take it the wrong way, but my no means will my son be near this tank. I understand everyone's concern thats why ive taken other measures to ensure he has no access to the tank.

well i just did the measurements and some @$$ kissing to the wife and got permission to make the tank 12' long X 34"high x44" deep External dimensions. Problem here, this would make the tank cost WAY more, so it would take longer. I do not have a garage, so im building this in my living room, then it will need to be taken outside to the front porch to be painted. So with some opinions from you all which isnt hard to get, what should i do.
