I read an article telling people how to start an aquarium and the writer said "Start with a small aquarium with good, hardy fish such as guppies, OSCARS, bettas, or REDBELLIED PACUS." Then she started to talk about the nitrogen cycle.

i had a ladie walk into my store and ask for clown loaches for a 20 gal. and i told her that they will reach a foot long and she said "ive been keeping fish for 20 years they never get that long" so i sold them to her knowing i would not win (she did not know about the nitrogen cycle

)I think you are terribly rude and if this is a common occurance for you a snob. Not only are you complaining about a job you have that pertains to a hobby you ?enjoy? Most of the fish that I see in "chain pet stores" are indeed very small. Babies even. I think you could of done it in a very different way. Maybe the couple could set the tank in a "warm" part of the house. I mean 1.5 gal could easily be heated by the sun or a near by furnace. At least enough to keep a few tetras or barbs happy. Or plants!!!! Very few going in to buy a new aqarium think of plants. And who of us hasn't started with a smaller aquarium. You sell the small tank with a couple of hardy fish. Then wait for them to come back. More fish, bigger aquariums. When I first got my gar every one said like 75 gal minimum for him. The guy was only 3 inches max. Well 5 mths later we are still in the 40 gal breeder HAPPY as clams. Yes one day, fish god willing, he will get a bigger home.. as he grows. And when I buy that ginormous tank It WON'T be from that horrible woman I met at petco. I don't think you and this woman had to have the interaction you did. I think maybe you are just a bad sales person and should maybe think of a different job choice. Remember jobs are what we get paid for. Hobbies we do for free. When these intersect you should be thankful and content.
*sighs* If some clueless customer comes into the store and ask for something totally ridiculous, try to persuade him to see it your way. If they're stubborn, suck it up and give him what he wants. They'll probably failed and come back, either complaining, learn from his mistakes, or neither, or against the odds, nothing will go wrong. Somethings may never be as perfect as you may wish, but remember that you job isn't to yell in their face, as much most would want to, but to educate your customers and sell. If they ignore your advice, there's nothing you can do. Even if you refuse to sell the fish/tank/products/etc., the chances are they won't change their mind if they aren't willing to compromise. It's their problem, not yours.
I find that for every 100 or so idiots that come in. There's that one customer that comes up to me, and says "these are the fish I want, what do I need to do to keep them". That one person who listens, and is willing to learn, makes my job bearable.
