anyone had this problem

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
rich i still think water was the original problem in some way and although you now know you have gill worms its understanding what caused the stress for the animals to release an out break of usally dormant gill worms given the fact that you have never had it in 15 years of keeping rays something must of changed

what caused the animals such stress

now i could be wrong here so dont shoot me down but all stories should have a start middle and end

and relating the story to this gill worm incident could help many other hobbiest and save a few rays to

now my understanding for gill worm at the early stages is that salt and raising the temperature can be used to control further growth if ineed used in conjuction with uv sterilizers ( for me this has worked several times but is it fact or myth )

the thread has got some great info but its seeing the wood through the trees

i fully understand why somebody would suggest that you dont see tonnes of salt dumped in the actual river but nor do see litres of tremazol or wormex being added its what works for the hobby that makes sence

it would be great if stefan or mark could summarise in conjunction with youself rich

real good infomation great job gents

just asking someone to point out what i should be looking for.

ok, have a look at richards video once again. The typcial "gulps" can only be seen four times, at second 3, 7, 12 and 16.

@Richard, are they sometimes also breathing onesided? That would be the next typical symptom.

The third and not so obvious symptom would be a slight red/pink discolouration around the mouth and "gillholes" (sorry for my poor english) on the belly side. I think, this is a sign for a massive increase of the worms population, which makes already adult worms leaving the gills and irritating the rays skin. But as already said, this is not soooo obvious, cause I already also mentioned this at very hungry P14, who schrubbed their mouth continuously in the sand, while searching for food ;)

@once again richard: I've just overflown most of the other answers, but in my opinion, besides Mark, AT LEAST also Mike and David gave good and helpfull advice. I just noticed the real problem, cause this a typical P14 problem, which I am relatively experianced in, and which comes up from time to time (in my tanks about all 2-3 years, when I've done something wrong, which stresses the P14 too much)

It's also my opinion, that a problem must be investigated almost 100% before treatment, but investigating the rays gills is not easy. Therefore, as an exception, I think following my experiance is enough for this time :)

Stefan

Hi Richard,

have read your post a few minutes ago for the first time and have had a look at your video.....

......I also had this problem for a few times within the last years....always after I tried to combine them with leopoldi ;) meanwhile I've given up to try that.

Regards
Stefan

its clear that the leo is the problem , just let me know when you want me to pick him up ;)

seriously though i hope its going well.
would it hurt to add a couple of extra air pumps to increase oxygen content ? just a thought. might just give the rays a bit extra help with getting better and make breathing a little easier whilst they are recovering / undergoing further treatment .

thanks stefan

do you use salt at the early symptons ?

or would you wait ?

i have used salt at the early stages and it seems to work i have young p14s and have had several before ,i have treated with tremazol but had packiging issues which because of indeed lost my animals

i then treated with waterlife parazon p which done the job

rich not wanting to steal the thread but understand

thanks alan

i think the stress was cause by putting and a taking out to many diffrent types of fish

the 1st sign of a problem was going backwards on forwards on the spot like they were trying to shack sand of then

this problem started just after the scobina were removed we all know p14 dont take that well to change

Anyone in the US want to ship me some PRAZIPRO as it not for sale in the UK

send me a PM if you can help

I can send you some, just let me know how many gallons worth of treatment you want one bottle will treat 1900 gallons I think, Email me your shipping info I have bottles and will send them out to you this week. Just cover the shipping and meds cost and were good.

right i think I'm going to use tremazol as that is the easy thing for me to find in the UK

Mark are you sure its safe ?
shall i get the tremazol pro or the normal one ?

i cant get it delivered until Tuesday as i cant find a stockist i can go and buy from tomorrow

will the rays be OK until Tuesday most of the salt and all of the esha have been removed from my system and the temp is now down to 83f

they are breathing a lot better at that temp so I'm hoping they will be OK until Tuesday

Hi Richard

I am sure it is safe. If you send me an email i will give you my phone number and we can talk it through. I have liters of the stuff at my place. If anyone you know is going through the Netherlands they could pick up a liter or two for you Brits.
With big tanks you need alot of the stuff.

hi richard im glad to see that you have figured it out. i have just got done reading the entire thread and have waited to post as i have no experience with what you are going through now. so since i have no advice to give my post would just be bad advice or wasted space. but now i think i might have some good advice lol. it sucks that you got attacked in some of the advice given and that you even got alot of wrong advice. but notice that when you got the video posted you got the correct help. thats what sucks about forum advice is there are so many different things to go wrong that are similer. we are all not vets and can only really help with our own experiences and if they sound close to something we have gone through then we give the advice of what we did. but as you can tell the treatments were far off. i think the best advice given throughout this thread was identify before treatment. dont stress out and panic and do the first things said. get that video up alot sooner next time so people can see what you are going through and give the correct advice. i hope that this last thing helps and if it does then now i know what to look for if this happens to me. so good luck and keep us updated.
