Hey. An auto locker will only hurt the tires IF you give it gas around a turn. They ratchet so they will Un-lock around turns. And My one friend has had his Dana 35 with welded spiders for 40000 miles now with 32inch tsls. And his tires are fine. And he beats the crap outta it all the time. So its really hard to say whats good and whats not. And the ring gear will be fine man. My old jeep had the stock dana 35. With 3.23 gears and it had welded spiders for 2 years and about 25k on the streets. And never had ONE problem with the axle. RIght now I have a Toyota with a spool and an aussie. With 35inch tires. And never had one problem. And i beat the crap outta that thing.

I blew apart 2 gm 10 bolt (half ton) ring gears with 35's. A dana 35 isn't even a 1/4 ton axle!:WHOA:

a toyota has a stronger axle then the jeep. Going around corners is going to still be teeth jarring even if gas is not applied. It is not worth running a locker in the D35, and if u must just upgrade to the super35 kit which gives u more splines, bigger ring gear and stronger shafts, but it might as well just be a bandaid, From what it sounds like you should just run what u got, maybe a small body lift (no more then a inch n a half) and maybe cut ur fenders a smidge. Also, if you wanna improve your offroad performance, get a pair of sway bar disconnects, allows a ton of travel in the front and u wont sacrifice rollover rate (on the road) and they are cheap.

Are you still talking to santoury??!!

How many locked dana 35s do you know of??? As I know of about 10. And again with tires under 33inches. You wont really have problems. And like anything if you really want to break it. You can. And buddy if your telling Jude to get a body lift. Shouldnt you know that jeep cherokees (XJ) are unibody!!!

That is what I was getting at!

Haha i was thinking that he had a wrangler for some reason...?? I do not know anyone who has wasted money on their Dana 35, except when they need to replace it. I ran mine when i had 32s and a 4 banger, but when i dropped in the 4.6 i decided to upgrade to a full floating Corporate 14 bolt (complete overkill). I know someone who put a auto locker u front in a Dana 30 runnin 33's and hes happy, but hes also got a 4cyl so hes prolly not gonna break it no time soon.
For someone who wheels a couple times a month and has basic stock tires, a locker is a waste, the benefits are not worth the cons. I dont know a huge amount of Cherokees, but i know some Wranglers (yjs) came factory with a LS in the rear, in my opinion the best thing for you

Well put. Although the wrangler rear wouldn't fit, I think a Dakota rear might be a direct bolt in. A few minutes at a junk yard with a measuring tape would tell you for sure. If you find one with the right ratio, limited slip was (is) an option in that truck, so a swap could be done in a few hours.

Now that I think about it, I used to have an 86 cherokee that came with a d35 and a factory auto locker (it was one of those gems with the gm 2.8:irked:) I never once felt it engauge and it was a one legger all the time.:screwy:

Oh yeah, one more thing...I was just bustin yer balls about the unibody thing.:grinno:

im pretty sure a rear wrangler will fit u gotta weld new perches tho, to be perfectly honest i know entirely too much about cars (specially muscle cars) but i had no idea they didnt make body lifts for Cherokees, or that they were uni body...from what it sounds tho, i think santourys best bet would be to keep what hes got.
If i were him id Keep the cherokee till he got a Daily driver, some stupid good gas mileage car. By this time your 4.0 would be gettin on the old side (400k+ mi) Have that stroked to a 4.6. Then, assuming he has a Torqueflight999, bolt a Dana 300 to that, then put a 8.8 in the rear and somehow get 35s under your cherokee (5.5inch lift and a BF hammer would prolly work)
