Anyone not feed feeders to their gars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
my gar was on feeders when i first purchased him. it took almost 3 weeks for him to finally eat anything. i refused to buy feeders and he finally took a cut up frozen silver side. now he's eating freeze dried krill and the frozen silvers. i have yet to get him to eat frozen beef hearts or a pellet but i'm trying.

ive been tryin really hard to get mine off feeders.. ive got one on market shrimp and diy loach food and hes mouthing pellets.. i just cant get the other one to even show any interest in anything other than feeders..

My friend use to use feeders and would come to me every 2 months looking for medicine for his gar. Eventually the gar came close to the brink of death and once again I gave him medicine. After that last incident, he starved his gar until it ate pellets and no more feeders now

I feed frozen fish to my Gar, any live feeders get eaten by my Oscar before the Gar sees them...:D
He eats mealworms and pellets as well.
I heard that Gar can survive sick feeders pretty easily because they're pescivores and eat sick and dying fish in the wild as well.
But I wouldn't advise giving sick or risky fish, though!
Only the best for the monsters!

Feeders can be more than just goldfish. You can use insects, worms, fish, cattle, or even people you don't like! Just raise your feeders yourself so you know they are clean.

Seems alot of people don't. Awesome. I kept seeing people talking about feeding feeders to their gars and thought I was the only one who didn't.

I like to use feeders when the gar are small/young, because they evoke a more aggressive feeding reaction that other foods seem to. The gar also seem to grow a little faster with live than with pellets or other prepared. Once they get to about 10" though, I definitely start working them onto prepared. Now all but my spotted take prepared, but he's only 9" so he's got a little time left with live foods.

i used to give my gar feeders then i stoped cause of the risk so i feed him silver sides now and about a week later i wasd feeding my oscars her pellets and a gar actually went for them and ate them i wonder what gotten into him lol

I had my Gar attacking the pellets like it was live food, splashing and snapping and he mostly missed.
Now 2 weeks ago he began the swim up slowly and opening his mouth real gently and let the pellets float into that big mouth.
Fish do learn quickly, if food is involved!
