Anyone not feed feeders to their gars?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
i feed my gar a mix including live minnows...i catch them from local lakes and if i can't catch some i get them from the bait shop...the best feeders i think are wc because they are not given any pellets or flakes or any of the supliments and generally are much heathier then any lfs feeders...

I like the "Pellet-stuck-in Gar-mouth-story" a lot!:D

Thanks :). I thought it was pretty funny too. The gar definitely looked irritated with the pellet. That was almost as funny as when my florida gar decided to eat flake food from the surface :screwy:.

NEVER fed my gar or any of my fish feeders.....call me old fashion:clap

my gar is 12-13 inches long

so what do you feed your gar? and how do you get it away from feeding feeders?

i had been trying not to feed my gar feeders for 3 & 1/2 weeks but it still wouldn't eat anything else. so i gave up and gave it feeders for now. i will continue to try other methods to get it off the feeders. thanks.

One thing you can try is using tongs to feed the feeders to the gar. After a while, it will associate the tongs with food. Once that happens, try mixing up the food with other things, like pieces of shrimp, tilapia, or fd krill. He should take to it in no time. That's how I trained my first Florida gar off live. Then he helped to train all my other gars without me doing all the work :D.

Yeah, I don't use feeders when I had one, but other fish always became feeders...

Mine go crazy for Hikari Cichlid Gold. I didn't even have to try with one of them. I got a new one, and I knew she ate it, and so I put some in for her, and Fluffy just went after it, no problem. It doesn't hurt to see if they'll just take the pellets -- and it might work out!

Once my gar ate 1 shrimp he was hooked, the hard part is getting them to eat or even bite at one. Patience is associated with gars often. lol
