Anyone not feed feeders to their gars?

One of the funniest things I've seen (besides my 13" Florida gar attempting to eat flake food :screwy:) was one of my shortnose gars getting a pellet stuck on the teeth on one side of his mouth. It took him about 15 minutes of chomping on it and shaking his head to dislodge it before he could eat it. He looked funny with a pellet hanging out the side of his mouth :).

I feed my gars about 3 dozen goldies every 3-4 days. Never had a problem with parasites. Make sure to examine feeders before buying them.

Most people that really bother to keep gar, with any serous intent, do not feed them feeders..

:screwy:

Did you not bother to read any of the previous posts? Most of us are "serious" gar keepers, and we regularly feed feeders. Gars are piscivores, and while they can be kept fine without feeding live foods, many of us tend to think that occasional live feeding provides them with enrichment.

I use to raise convict cichlids to feed my fish. But my gar was never a big fan of them and my other cichilds got sick of them so I don't do it anymore. I do feed my gar earthworms, crickets, Hikari Cichlid Gold, Massivore and thawed shrimp.

Besides, I try to use platies or rosy reds more than feeder comets. Both of those are a better feeder imo, and can usually be bought for the same price if not cheaper.

Yeah, with the question I meant basically who doesn't feed the nasty comet/goldfish looking things as feeders. I'm totally for pretty much any other type since their usually cared for alot better then 200 fish in a 20gallon tank.

Heh, the stores around here use more like 90-100 gallon tanks, but they put anywhere from 2,000 to 5,000 at a time in those tanks. That's a lot of fish!
