Yeah, with the question I meant basically who doesn't feed the nasty comet/goldfish looking things as feeders. I'm totally for pretty much any other type since their usually cared for alot better then 200 fish in a 20gallon tank.

those nasty comets are still good food. ask my nearly 17" florida! u know how he got that big in less than a year? 1.5" to 16" in a year and 4 months later he is now 17". he got that because of those as you say nasty comets. i feed him religiously. TONS! still does eat alot.
(in case u were wondering putting down thos big of numbers from a florida is very unusual. in fact a normal first growing season for a florida in captivity usually gets 12" to 14")
and perun, you of all people should know that feeders are not necessarily bad! Done properly there is nothing wrong with it. Do a large variety and your good!

NEVER fed my gar or any of my fish feeders.....call me old fashion:clap

my gar is 12-13 inches long

no feeders is old fashioned?:screwy:
maybe its just me but feeding it what it would eat normally seems more old fashioned

When I first got my Gar as a top dwelling fish, i got surprised by him stuffing himself during handfeeding, and then just lay down on the gravel...
And he still does so.
Swimming around like crazy before feeding, and than just chill on the bottom.
3 fish a day is his usual diet.
And 13 " in 6 months, so I wonder what the future brings!

I started my spotted gars with feeders because the pet shop was using the local version of minnows here. They also eat the frozen bloodworms. I started training them to eat Arowana (sp?) pellets. One learned and 2 months later is 3 X the size of the other. Both were approximately the same size when I bought them. The other is skinny and hasn't grown much so I started feeding the bloodworms again. I will take that one and one of my smaller cats and bichirs and put them in a separate tank to catch them up with the rest of the monsters unless someone has a better idea.

One other thing the locals do here is go to the river, catch feeders, isolate them and medicate them to make sure they have no disease. Though we keep river and pond fish, I'm not brave enough to try that method.

Also, I don't do the goldfish... It seems that the carp family is not suitable for a feeder - for a snack, maybe... The difference between a glass of wine a day and a bottle.

so what do you feed your gar? and how do you get it away from feeding feeders?

i had been trying not to feed my gar feeders for 3 & 1/2 weeks but it still wouldn't eat anything else. so i gave up and gave it feeders for now. i will continue to try other methods to get it off the feeders. thanks.

i feed him hikari carnivore pellets, tetracichlid carnivore sticks and krill. Sometimes i feed him frozen shrimp which he really likes. He basically eats anything i put in the tank, I made sure when i bought him he was not fed on feeders.
