If you don't already have the 55 , then wait and get a 75. Same length but 5" deeper which will open up some options.

A good alternative to a BGK in a smaller tank is an African brown knife.

are these the same as BGK? just as cool or playful?

So are BGK, what's the difference?
Just because the BGK doesn't have a "Giant" in front of the name doesn't mean it won't get big.
I've ssen a Clown knife force into a 55 & it did not look happy @ all,even tho it was by far the largest fish in the tank.
It was always hiding & only came out to eat.
Most of the knife fish need @ least 2X that of which your 55G can offer. IMO I'd say 3X's 55G to be honest.
That's the only way you can see the true monster in these that fish.


You could probably go with most of the cichlids you listed as a grow out but not permanently.

Have you considered getting a female?
They stay a lil smaller than the males, & can be nicer is some cases.
A female will mos def last longer in a 55G, while you talk you mom into letting you go bigger.

im doing some firemouths possible ebjd then maybe a pair of blue acaras but then i will probably do a bichir or scratch that and do a catfish a bgk..the catfish and bgk im doing regardless

If you won't get a Giant Gourami because it will get too big the same should go for the BGK. Brown Knives are smaller. This is the point that the other members are making.

i know i made a change to my thinking cause i realized it isnt just me its my fishes happiness..but im kinda scared if i got a bichir for instance a senegal..it would be to much of a predator and kill others but also im getting a catfish and i dont want them inflicting each other but anyways i seen on youtube and what not that brown ghosts are playful as BGK's so ill switch over unless the glass knife fish is cool to they look very fascinating!!
