Arapaima Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
This is incredible!

Thanks Smoosh, it's not that difficult, actually surprised myself at how everything could be done at such low cost.
Space makes for great savings. If I'd had to run all this with expensive filter-setups because of limited space...then it would have been much more difficult.

Just a general update..as mentioned, major cutback of the 2nd bog. Was groing out of control and wind/rain started taking its toll.
Now wait and see how it comes back up.

Mr. T is getting spoiled. He does not touch pellets anymore. Just hot-dogs and shrimp.
Will go out and get other types of fish, luckily not too expensive here and plenty of choice.

Also noticed 4 or 5 of the Tiger Barbs I put in some time ago. Being famous for their fin-nipping. All they do right now is chase Mr. T. around the pond.
Quite a sight, those tiny fish going after the fins of that monster....lol.

Well, the tiger barbs are becoming a problem for Mr. T.
It's 4 of them and all they do is chasing Mr. T, nipping his anal fin.
You can clearly see how Mr. T is upset with it. Gets no rest and has no defense against it.

Trying to catch 4 barbs in a 10k Gallon pond is pretty much out of the question, but need to do something about it.

Options I can think of:

1. More barbs and hope they start schooling and harassing among themselves.
2. Natural enemies?

Any help, very much appreciated....

Regards,
Luc

time to whip out some fishing gear! jk, I don't think adding more would be a good idea. If the problem persists.. you've got an even larger problem. how big are the barbs?

Seeing as how the bottom is pretty flat, you can try a really fine cast net?

Thanks for the input Brian.
Goes against my feeling as well for adding more of them.
Tiger Barbs are maybe 3cm...and cast net.....that's gonna be a monstrous task, bottom looks flat but there's levels, bumps, 2 big concrete disks...
On top of that, since they continuously follow Mr. T, I'd much likely have him netted as well...not really what I want to do.
Seems labyrinth fish are their natural enemies, but even that will be a lottery jackpot to get them to see the barbs or even chase/eat them.
I think I'll need to hurry building some PVC hiding spots for the Crystal Eye, hoping he'll get to them.
By no means Mr. T is in any danger, he's as fat as a cat I'd say so the extended swimming around burns off some for now.
But it's painful to see him so annoyed and looking at you like: "WTF is that?"

Seems Mr. T. is getting a bit more used to the Barbs...
Still annoyed with it and will have to do for now. Lack of a quick and easy solution.

Managed to put a figure on his length yesterday.
He's now just over 130cm long. That's 4.265 Foot for all the non-metric readers...lol
At this rate, he'll be a 5 footer by April next year.
Remember that he was somewhere 90-100cm in January when we found him.
So it's a 30-40cm growth in 10 months.. Amazing...

If you put a couple of big Pbass in there they will take care of the Barbs and Mr T will have some natural homies. Just a thought, I love your story, been watching from the start.

hello Brian,

Pbass has been on my mind for quite some time, but not related to the Tiger Barbs. Should take care of Tilapia as well.
Only need to get out and find some.
Well, nothing more fun than fish-window shopping...heheee

Cheers, thanks for the input and glad you enjoy the story same as I do.
