Arapaima Pond Build

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Sorry no pictures yet, busy with work, but Mr. T. doing well.
Tiger Barbs problem pretty much solved, I found 3 of them in the settling-tank, so that's one that was eaten or still in the pond but not bothering Mr. T anymore.
The breeding of Tilapia has also been stopped in its tracks. Those Peacock bass are monsters...lol.

Noticed the same again yesterday with Mr. T's 'pellet-trick'.
Will try to make a video some time, but might be difficult to do.
He literally takes a mouth full of pellets, gets to the back end and hoovers.
Then slowly spitting out little bits of pellets and his eyes moving around to see the other fish fighting over it.
If he sees an opportunity, he'll dash into it and hopes to get one of them.

Smart guy... using his brains... lol.

Cheers,
Luc

Before I kept fish, I always thought they were far from the smartest animals. But that pellet trick takes it to a whole new level lol a video would be awesome. Glad to hear he's doing well.

Got a call from the office on Tuesday late afternoon.
All of a sudden, there where about 3 dead fish in the pond.
I was out, day off, but it was only Tilapia that where affected.
Koi, mud-carp, oscar, Mr. T, Peacock Bass, Pangasius, all doing fine, swimming and darting around.

Decided to go over, asked them to start releasing water and fill up at the same time.
Those drains did come in handy, in about half an hour, they lowered the water by 50cm.
Final toll stood at about 25 Tilapia. Cut some of them open to check their blood, bright red, so water couldn't be a problem.
Also, no ammonia smell and they'd been on far lower feeding frequency to avoid overload of decaying food for the last few weeks already.

My house-keeper said that Mr. T was not eating much as well, but I suspect that he had his stomach full with some of the Tilapia already.
Spent a couple of hours watching him and the rest of the pond as we where filling it up again, he was just fine, sniffing around, getting his pats and strokes on the back, playful as always.

Yesterday was a holiday, but today, pond back to normal, finishing the fill-up, Mr. T. is hungry as always feeding him his prawns..

My guess for now is a Tilapia specific virus. Given the fact that they are all offspring of only 4 Tilapia, lots of in-breeding/cross-breeding, they might be easily affected.
At the same time, will get some testing kits for Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite and start to keep a proper log-book with results.
Housekeeping lady was all in tears with the thought alone that Mr. T. might be affected. She's been praying for his well-being.
(Well, at the same time she mentioned that if anything happened to Mr. T, it might affect her year-end bonus...lol)

But ok, looking at the positive side, the problematic overcrowding from Tilapia is now solved.

Seems that all the fish we took out, disappeared into frying pan of security guard and other people.
Told them not to, but Thai people and food, they just eat about everything already here, and so the fish went.
No sick people this morning, ah well, TiT...(This is Thailand)..

Hello Pacu-mom, thanks for the comment, yes indeed. Just checked on him and the rest of the fish, all back to normal, pond almost full again, another 10-15cm. Got the other fish food for first time since Tuesday, all in a frenzy getting the pellets. Enough of a sign for me that it's back to normal.

As for the reasons, anyone's guess, but I'm pretty sure of the virus/illness option. can't imagine that all other fish where just fine and only the Tilapia having water-quality problems.

Well, got 2 test-kits, Ammonia (TetraTest NO3/NO4 Total Ammonia) and pH (API) Ammonia reads 0 and pH is 7.6.

pH too high for my liking (and the test only goes up to 7.6 so need to find a wider range test-kit), but should be the least of my worries unless it's really off the scale.
Ammonia reads 0 so that's another strike off the hazards list.

Will keep a weekly log on the values and need to bring the NO2 test-kit from home (TetraTest).

pH could be explained with our tap coming from industrial water source, need to check the Estate Office for their values.

Overall, fish all healthy and active, really looks like a virus/disease that hit the tilapia.
