Got a call from the office on Tuesday late afternoon.
All of a sudden, there where about 3 dead fish in the pond.
I was out, day off, but it was only Tilapia that where affected.
Koi, mud-carp, oscar, Mr. T, Peacock Bass, Pangasius, all doing fine, swimming and darting around.
Decided to go over, asked them to start releasing water and fill up at the same time.
Those drains did come in handy, in about half an hour, they lowered the water by 50cm.
Final toll stood at about 25 Tilapia. Cut some of them open to check their blood, bright red, so water couldn't be a problem.
Also, no ammonia smell and they'd been on far lower feeding frequency to avoid overload of decaying food for the last few weeks already.
My house-keeper said that Mr. T was not eating much as well, but I suspect that he had his stomach full with some of the Tilapia already.
Spent a couple of hours watching him and the rest of the pond as we where filling it up again, he was just fine, sniffing around, getting his pats and strokes on the back, playful as always.
Yesterday was a holiday, but today, pond back to normal, finishing the fill-up, Mr. T. is hungry as always feeding him his prawns..
My guess for now is a Tilapia specific virus. Given the fact that they are all offspring of only 4 Tilapia, lots of in-breeding/cross-breeding, they might be easily affected.
At the same time, will get some testing kits for Ammonia, Nitrate, Nitrite and start to keep a proper log-book with results.
Housekeeping lady was all in tears with the thought alone that Mr. T. might be affected. She's been praying for his well-being.
(Well, at the same time she mentioned that if anything happened to Mr. T, it might affect her year-end bonus...lol)
But ok, looking at the positive side, the problematic overcrowding from Tilapia is now solved.
Seems that all the fish we took out, disappeared into frying pan of security guard and other people.
Told them not to, but Thai people and food, they just eat about everything already here, and so the fish went.
No sick people this morning, ah well, TiT...(This is Thailand)..
