Are fish the most abused pet?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
You're right, when it comes to deaths fish take the cake. And I imagine ammonia poising is not a pleasant way to go.

A fish will only live a couple months with terrible owners but a dog will have a lifetime of some pretty serious abuse and neglect.

It's just hard to compare the two.

I would imagine that feeder rats/mice are pretty comparable to fish if you consider living conditions inside pet shops. A lot of shops hide them for a reason I'd imagine.
Well if youd like to compare to feeders, just think about the conditions of feeders guppies, goldfish, shrimp, crayfish, etc.

Nobody comes up to you when your walking a dog and says "that's a nice dog, I used to have dogs but they all died"

Very good analogy.

Honestly, fish have terrible situation in all areas, in the ocean they ingest oil or plastic and die, nets bring up 1,000's of pounds of fish from deep in the water and they suffer severe pressure change and have small implosions in their body, in farms their pumped full of steroids in overstocked tanks and once they die they get shoved on your dinner plate, and in many stores the death toll is higher than the people buying them, most people give up on fish keeping from just not even knowing what a water change or nitrogen cycle is and all their fish die, its really just from lack of knowledge mostly.

I dont really think fish are comparable to dogs and cats, these are neglected for a life time or put to death because peer lack of humility and care for animals, fish are valued closer to insects than actual animals to most people, i think thats where most the neglect to them comes from.

I talked to a guy friday who asked me why the snails in his betta tank constantly kept climbing out of the tank and making a run for it.

I told him his nitrates were probably through the roof and the snails were jumping ship because the water is toxic. The betta has a labyrinth organ and can utilize atmospheric oxygen, otherwise he'd be dead too.

so I asked the guy how often he changes his water his reply was "I don't"

I explained the whole nitrogen cycle thing, nitrates, fish produce ammonia when they breathe, etc

I understand the lack of information for new fish keepers..... But honestly how stupid do you have to be to think something that eats, defecates, and breathes in the same small amount of water is OK indefinitely???

Yeah I'll lock a dog in a box, and just keep cramming food through this hole in the box here.... oh what do ya know? it died. I don't understand. Why would this dog die when I drowned it in it's own septic waste?

People are just dumb. There's a fine line between simply being uneducated and being too stupid to breed.

not yet, but it wouldn't surprise me.
I have had a guy come up and ask me if I wanted to hear a dog story, and when I said no proceeded to tell me about dogs dieing in arizona from heat exhaustion while locked in a shed.

close enough?

and you can't say ignorance doesn't play a part in dog abuse. like people trying to dock tails with tight rubber bands.

Im not saying dogs dont get abused. That isn't true by any means.

The common theme is almost everybody you'll ask (especially people with kids) have tried their hands at keeping fish and killed them all. And admit it without shame like its no big deal and not their fault.

Conversely most dog and cat owners don't buy mammals on a whim and accidentally kill them due to their own negligence or lack of information. And if they did they would probably not admit to it in the same fashion "yeah I bought my son a big box full of kittens but they all died, eventually we got tired of buying little johnny new kittens every few months and just threw the box away"

I agree, fish and aquariums are treated more like furniture.

I'll admit I'm biased. I value my fish as much as my dog. Sometimes more than my wife, lol, I'm joking. No really. Haha

Always take this as a compliment, truth is our fish are buddy than most people will ever catch.
Kind of hard. It's like them saying, Oh, you have a dog, I'm going bait him then grill him up and eat him. Nobody talks about fishing for sport when they see my tank.

Just the thought of guests coming into my house and talking about eating my pets...doesn't sound right.

I understand, however when my friends see my fish and say " where's the fishing pole" I don't take them seriously, I take it as a compliment. I myself would love to catch some big peacock bass just like what's in my tank. Doesn't mean I want to catch and eat what's in my tank, just an example.
Also my friends nor myself eat dog, but we do eat fish. I just can't make the connection.
