And the majority end up dying because people don't understand how salt water tanks work. I'm alright with fresh but salt is different, you need to know what your doing otherwise you've just wasted a lot of money & killed a lot of beautiful fish..
@skj: I agree. Breeding fish that have trouble moving around, seeing, basically living, like some types of Goldfish, now that's cruel. Telescopes, moors, wen type breeds come to mind.
I don't encourage people to join but do educate them about it. Its a fun hobby but in order for your fish to thrive & be happy you need to know what your doing, so I try to stay as educated as possible.

i agree with you too... about salt tanks.. they are tricky.. and you really need to learn everything you can..
I think the goldfish in a bowl is cruel. I also think it isn't fair to a fish swimming free in the amazon to be taken and confined to an aquarium and commercial fish food.

I agree with the whole goldfish thing as well. Another reason I look down on PETA and other "animal" rights group is that they don't care about fish. Some one could be arrested for keeping a dog in a really small cage. Well what about a goldfish in a bowl!!!!! They get mad when people don't clean out dog feces from their enclosures, well what about unclean tanks!!!! I find this to very hypocritical of animal rights organizations!

1. Collection methods used with wild caught species.
2. Storage and transport from points of origin to local fish shops (lfs).
3. Overstocked tanks.
A. at lfs
B. at home
4. Poorly maintained tanks.
5. Poor water quality.
6. Releasing unwanted pets into environment.
7. Culling and other issues associated with selective breeding practices.
8. Deformed results of expermental breeding efforts becoming a category of consumer desired fish.
9. Fish kept in too small tanks or bowls.
10. Poor fishkeeping practices. For example, not using quarantine tank.
11. Folks wanting to have a tank but not willing to do the upfront study and gain the knowledge necessary to keep tanks, in particular the saltwater variety.
