Armatus ID? Still Black (Hydrolycus wallacei)

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, I guess I'm the odd man out......

I've raised LOTS of Armatus and see variations in every group.

Looks like an Armatus to me.
You're not alone! I'm with you!

Lol, I love how skeptical you guys are.

The differences between this fish and a normal armatus are greater than an armatus and a tatauaia. Surely if we can accept that tats are different based on similar traits, it's not a stretch to believe this?

Given in-person access to this fish with my camera, I have no doubt in my mind that I could prove this beyond any shadow of a doubt. *shrug*

Only reason I'm skeptical is cause I've raised lots of Armatus, just like JL (while not near as many as him) but I've seen variations in my own tank. Go get 20 Armatus and you'll se exactly what we're talking about.

The pics I see online of Wallys don't even look that much like Armatus to me.

I don't have a leg to stand on though, look how often I'm wrong, but I'm fine with it, I enjoy learning.

I stand alone on some of the wolf species in my tanks, this isn't much different.

This should be real easy to figure out. Aren't max sizes completely different? Don't Wallys top out at like a foot? So when the fish in this thread hits a foot and a half then it can either be a record sized Wally or a variant of Armatus????

Get a setailed side shot of the lateral line scale count. It's 95 with wallacei and over 100 with Armatus. That'll settle it.

I'll have to do some more research on the wallies. Afaik, the foot long quote was only my summation of wallies based in scombs, but I made sure to caveat in the sticky that I had no data to support it. I've not had much luck finding scholarly info on wallacei, so if someone has had luck, pleae point me in thay direction!

This is precisely why I'd like to be alone in a dark room woth this fish and my camera! Lol I have the skills to make this happen! I'm just not willing to drive across country to probe a point on a fish forum lol :p

What about the relatively small front teeth on the fish in question?.....has that ever been seen on any other armatus?

Teeth on the fish in question is not relatively small. Armatus replaces its teeth rapidly, so it's not quite possible to judge the teeth of 2 different Armatus. One could have new teeth while the other's teeth is about to fall off. If you go back to post #60, their teeth look the same to me

I didn't see much convincing stuff on the different teeth sizes.

So we just need better pics and a lateral line count and it's settled! :)

Photos in post 21 and the video in post 37 had me thinking about the teeth size differences...the teeth on those fish appear thinner and smaller.I agree,a lateral line count settles this thing.
