Arowana hit the lid

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Been wondering that myself... What is crazy is that he is breathing good and follows you with his eyes when you move ,so it makes it hard to watch. My other Arowana keeps getting close to him like she knows he is injured and wants to stay close to him. In the past month they have started to act like they were wanting to mate and now this happens. My 2 Fire eels have stayed in the corner and they never do that. I have had Arowanas for the past 25 yrs and I have never seen anything like this.

If it has been this long and he hasn't moved...my guess would be that he is paralyzed. To hit the lid with that much force is going to do some damage.

You have to make a tough choice......but it sounds to me like he is suffering....

I am really sorry for both you and your Aro.

For euthinizing you can use clove oil....there is a Sticky on Euthinizing in the Freshwater Disease section

Sorry man....let us know how everything goes.:(

wow, how hard did he hit it? he's a pretty thick fish, and the chance he's paralyzed from hitting it is nuts, i hope for your sake he isnt,to euthanize such a lovely fish is pretty effed up, i hope he pulls through, andif he doesnt, im sorry for your loss. didyou give the situation a deadline? like if he doesnt pull through in say, "48" hours, you gotta put him to sleep?

Sorry about your aro drama. Definitely been there before...several times. Good luck.

I think the best way to euthanize a fish is to freeze it. I put the fish in a little water in a tupperware dish or something and put it in the freezer. It's simple and painless for cold blooded animals, they just go to sleep.

There are many who will argue this as to whether or not it's painless. Not sure this would work here anyhow considering the aro is 27" long.

He is still hanging in there and breathing ok and looking at me when I approach the tank. No changes still floating like the picture I posted , but I tried to hold him horizontal for about 30 min to allow him to get off his head for a little while and as soon as I let go he sinks head first. I got a bottle of tranquil that I used to transport my Arowanas back and forth to college so they would not injure themselves ,so I was thinking when the time comes to just put him to sleep then throw him in my freezer. I keep wishing he will pull out ,but it doesn't appear that that's going to happen.
