Baby Giant won't eat!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
looks like a yellow eel catfish.

Thanks everyone. I had tried the lower temp for a few days, but he seemed miserable. He's been hanging out in 75 degree water most of the time, and that seems to me where he is most comfortable. So, I really want to ID this little guy so that I can give him the best care possible. I don't think he is part of the Wallago genus as his mouth does not go past his eye (eliminates Wallago attu) and his gill placement looks nothing like the Wallago leerii. I was looking at the eye size and placement, and was thinking that maybe he is a Silurus asotus. What do you guys think?

Well you guys, I just want to say thank you for all your interest and help. I have been on other website forums that are just irritating and useless. But, here, at MFK, most everyone rocks. Everyone really tries to help each other out, and eagerly want to educated the ignorant who are actually trying to learn. (As for the inexperienced know it alls, good luck.) But, overall, MFKer's are awesome.

Good Lord -

heah Oscar - I reckon you need to spend more time searching catfish pictures on the web !!!

"eagerly want to educated the ignorant who are actually trying to learn. (As for the inexperienced know it alls, good luck" - comedy statement of the day!

It is indeed an ompock -

Tropical catfish - temp should be about mid 70's - will get to about 8" long - so not a giant by any stretch of the imagination (phew). Raise temps and offer chopped earthworm, bloodworms etc. Just leave pretty much alone and offer food - he should start to feed once the environment is stable.

Wet whiskers - I like your attention to detail (observing gills, eye placement etc) - many others on this site could learn from your approach!!

Now that we have an ID down... I would like to just point out (not sure if I missed it somewhere) but remember that treating catfish with meds should be done at half dose. That could also have something to do with the appetite loss.

Have you tried cut up fish fillets? I've never had a catfish turn down fresh fish fillets... Cut them into short strips about the same diameter of the cats mouth.
If all else fails, you could always try garlic extract on the food. Could never hurt to try
