Baby Giant won't eat!!!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, its now 3:28 am. I got up to see if he would eat in the middle of the night by the light of the moonlight I have on a tank on the other side of the garage. I offered him red wriggler worms again, and, finally, HE ATE!!! The little guy has a belly on him. I am not certain that it is the dark, or the fact that he is now a few days through the prazipro treatment. Either way, I don't care. He ate and thats a mile stone that says more than anything.
Thank you all...and thank you lophius for the compliment. For me, most of the fun of fish keeping is learning about the fish, including species, anatomy, environment, behavior, etc. I'm a nerd, and happy to be so.

nothing Nerdy about it...Those of us that are into our hobby simply have a dedication which some others don't understand

I'm assuming that you had also bummed up the temp in the tank which is the most likely reason for the appetite coming back, Prazipro is such a mild med that it is one of a very few meds which you can actually not only full dose a catfish with... you can double dose which no negative effects (there really isn't any reason to do so however). The medication wasn't the reason for the rejection of food, nor was it the time of the feeding (don't feel that you need to get up a 3:30 every morning to feed this little guy) It all comes down to the water temperature, which should always remain as close to a steady 80 degrees as possible.

Thanks guys.

The temp has been up to 75 or more for at least the last week and a half or more. I had him at this temp when I first got him, but when he refuse to eat for a week, I lowered to make sure that he wasn't having problems with higher temps causing lower oxygen. I had slowly lowered the temp over a two days to 63ish and increased air flow, but he just was sluggish and still not eating. So thats when I brought the temp back up to 75 over a day and a half, and he seemed happier. Finally, he ate his red worms last night.

As for the prazipro, I did a full dose. I love that stuff, but just don't use it with corydoras. I worked at a high end animal emergency hospital, and, fortunately, have had access to a lot of advice with medications from a fish vet.

As for me getting up at 3:00 am, I couldn't sleep and giving a shot at feeding him seemed like a good idea. I love my fish, but I'm NOT getting up in middle of the night to feed him on a regular basis. He's gonna have to cooperate a little.

Ompok bimaculatus seems to be the consensus, and I totally agree.
So, again, thank you everyone!

So quick update on the little guy. He's becoming more and more friendly. Every time I go out to the tank now he comes out to see what's up and beg. He's a great eater. He's hanging out with the discus now (pH 6.5 and temp 80 he's), and has a section of tank that isn't lit. The tank is well planted with lots of wood, and he can hide and not be bothered whenever he wants. He's active now without seeming overly stimulated or nervous. However, he is getting more an more bold as time goes on. It will be interesting if this boldness turns into aggression as he gets bigger. He's a really cool fish, and I'm so glad I picked him up.

Hi
I noted in your first post that you had added salt - this fish is a truly freshwater fish, so will not be comfortable in brackish water long term. Great to hear it's feeding and that it sn't the monster you initially thought it was.
Regards
Martin

What are you feeding your cats? Mine are taking silversides sometimes stuffed with some pellets inside.
