This is the wrong answer! Ropes is the correct one.:D
Well not really but it's $13 ropes! It's like buy one get one night a bw3 you can't pass that up! ;)

not to get off topic but you know i just recently found out that not everyone calls it BW3's lol

Im not familiar with that product but safe start is my fav and never failed me. I once dosed with it and the ammonia source was a clown loach and a couple of other small fish. Never took more than a week to cycle and always skipped the nitrite stage.

If it were me id just grab the 3 ropes (if they are in your stocking plans) and dose with safestart.

Just added a bottle of safe start and also added some shiners. THEN I'll get the ropes. The nitrites are too high to add ropes. Want to test the safe start on the shiners first. The only harm they'll have is the nitrites. My ammonia consuming bacteria is flourishing. Maybe the safe start in addition to the mature, cycled media will kick start the nitrite consumers.

Are you dosing it or just adding the whole bottle??

whole bottle for new tank. says to dose every time you add fish. you could also dose every water change. I personally feel that's a waste of money. Once you have a mature bunch of media in your canister you're good to go. I have a massive canister for this tiny 40g.

I went into petsmart today and they have about 8 75 gallon tanks for $1 per gallon. Well actually for the larger tanks it's 1/2 off which is about $80 per 75g tank. I'd like to go in there and buy them all! Might buy 1 tomorrow for no reason other than they're cheap.

You didnt use any dechlorinator prior to dosing right ?

How much did you dose ?

In the passed it took me about 1 week or so.

Register ammonia and/or nitrate ?

I dosed per the directions. Said entire bottle for 40 gallon tank. I did not use any dechlorinator. I shouldn't register any ammonia but when I went to test it i didn't have enough test fluid so I'm going to buy a new kit today. I am registering a very high nitrite level though.

Yeah, you have to dechlorinate while cycling that could be your problem there. i cant think of anything else that it could be.

oh I used it when I put the water in the tank but not right before I dosed. This tank has been running for a month. I've been dosing ammonia. This method has always worked for me but this time the nitrites aren't falling for me.
